Is this a MIJ Squier?

Is this a Japanese Squier? If so, I think somebody got a great deal:

Sure looks like one to me. Someone put a different pickguard on and I don't know what that stamp is on the back of the headstock, but it looks good otherwise.

Exactly the same as my first ever Tele in about 1988. What's with that pickguard though? Looks like laminated toilet paper!!!

OMG! I just realised I've been playing Telecasters for 20 years. 'Tis a cruel mistress - addiction

Yes it is a Japanese Squire. Although it's difficult to read, if you enlarge the front headstock picture you can see "Made In Japan" under "Telecaster". On at least some of the early guitars from Fender Japan, the Made In Japan and serial number were put on the front of the headstock. The stock Gotoh tuners are another Japanese indication.

......

Looks like it is one of the lower end models.

Sweet deal! I got one just like it for $200, and thought I got a deal! These can be great teles, with the awesome MIJ tele necks. I made mine into a string-thru, now one of my faves.
