Old amps like your Univox aren't really going up in price like the Paisley Tele is.

Without further ado, here are some pictures of the 68 paisley that belongs to my dad. Sorry for the flash in some of the pics. I'm by no means a professional photographer, but I think you'll be able to get the idea. Buckocaster, just glancing at the picture you linked to, I'd say my dad's is in even better shape than that one. It's spent quite a bit of time in the case. The serial number is 240718.

Hah! Not quite! I had it cleaned up and restrung about a year ago and it went right back in the case again. The guy that did the work pulled off the neck and checked out the wiring, pots, etc. and said everything on it was original and as clean as a whistle.

Guys I'm going to say it again. There is something... either the nitro or the composition of the "foil" backing of the paisley material that makes a silver background turn golden.

Look at that front shot. The plastic pickguard has some how protected that part of the guitar from the sun (uv rays I guess) and the background is silvery and the rest of the guitar has a golden background.

So, SOMETHING is going on there. And, as I've said before to much disagreement, this is why the MIJs have a silver foil background. Fender Japan usually tries very hard to get things correct where possible, so I don't think their silver background is a mistake. I think it must have been a silver background. But for some reason when the old one's aged that background turned gold and I think it did it pretty quickly too. Unfortunately, the MIJs don't make this lovely turn from silver to golden.

Also, I'm not sure why clear plastic would filter out the UV enough to keep the area behind it from turning color.

Maybe it's not UV rays, maybe its off gassing of the Nitro and the pickguard keeps that from happening.

Whatever it is these photos clearly show that this is the case.

Easily worth $20,000 I wouldn't be surprised at $25,000.

I'm glad that you said that! I was taking a shot in the dark when I was quoting those same figures to my girlfriend when this thread started. Percieved value plays a great part in guitar value.

I'm just thinking out loud, and since it is the internet I can do that...

Is there a chance that the shading/bursting on those was 2-part? Like a Candy finish. A base-coat with the pink on top?

My MiJ is definitely one coat, but in '68 I don't know how many metallic pinks were around.

If you know what I mean!

BTW - Tonight I am going to dream about that guitar in Alabama!

BTW, back in the day, in the music shops around here anyway, those were referred to as "purple paisley". Maybe pink wasn't manly enough in those days, eh?

I just saw the posts about the 6 string 68 Paisley, WoW, real clean. Anyone have a guess what my bass might be worth, the pickup isn't original. Thanks.

I never really loved the way the guitar sounded not realizing some day it would become a collectors item, I had a Jazz bass pickup put in. Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh........... I have been looking all over the house for the original pickup I can't imagine that I would have thrown it away, but I can't find it. I would like to find an original 68 pickup to put in, but there would still be a cutout where the Jazz went in, rectangular shaped instead of roundish like it was.

Anyway, those are my Paisley stories, and I'm sticking with it....... Thought I would share, looking forward to comments.
I'm going to try to post pictures if I can, I haven't used this forum before.

That's a good question.

I would think there is not nearly the demand for a bass.

The last Paisley bass I saw was at Gruhn's and I think they were asking right around a kilobuck for it.

But that was in '85.

I really don't have much of a clue, do I?

The drummer should've gotten a paisley snare. Hey! Now there's an idea! If they can reproduce a paisley finish on guitars, surely there's a way to make a drum set with it. I started out playing guitar, but moved onto drums (and play those MUCH better than I ever could a guitar). I think it would be nothing short of awesome to have a paisley finish on my drum kit!

Also, I was trying to dig up a picture of the original paisley that James Burton used, but his website is acting a little screwy. Know where any pictures of that might be? I googled around but didn't see it right away.

I don't have a clue. I've searched the internet for the past few days trying to find wallpaper or a fabric that matches it and have come up empty. It very well may be.

Edit: If it is, Bill Crook must have bought the rights to reproduce it. Maybe the user that posted his Crook paisley in the other thread could tell us something about it!

Outstanding - gorgeous guitar - incredible actually. I remember seeing the paisleys in a shop here in town back in '68 - and they didn't sell ... Now just look at them ... Thanks for all the photos, quikdecision!
