Steve Rhian

That cat has it all: Tele, tone, technique, taste... maybe some other 't'-words. Anyway, if you get a chance to see the Deryl Dodd show it's a Tele-fest starring Steve Rhian. There's a tall fella that sings a bit, but not enough to get in the way of the guitar pickin' -which, I may have mentioned, is excellent.

Maybe everyone already knows about this guy, but I didn't.

Steve is a friend of mine. I've seen him several times since we are both in Texas Country bands. A few years back, I saw on one of the forums that he's had most of his gear stolen and Robert Keeley was asking for pedal donations so they could be modded and given to Steve to replace his pedals. Anyway, I donated about 4-5 pedals to Keeley to be given to Steve. After Steve received them, he e-mailed me thanking me for the gesture. In the end he only kept the DD-3 delay and sent the rest back to me. The pedals he sent back were a AD-9, TS-9, and a TR-2.He later told me he really missed his Hermida Zendrive a lot. I told him he could borrow mine until Alf finished making his replacement. He gave me mine back about a month later. He told me if he could ever help me out just to let him know. Well I'd been gasing for a Sewell amp for a while. He hooked me up with Doug and I ended up getting a KILLER deal on a Texaverb 25 combo.I just talked to him about 2 weeks when I was planning a trip to Nashville. He told me to stop by on the way and I could hang for a few hours or stay at his place. As a matter of fact I found out he makes Custom Tele's which I've hear are some of the best players around. He's got one right now that I should take of his hands in a few weeks. I know I rambled on ,but the thread caught me by surprise and I just had to get all of this out. Steve is a GREAT human being and a HELL of a guitar player.

Steve is good friends with a buddy of mine, and I've heard nothing but great things about him as well. And yes, he's an amazing picker too.

Steve is a great player, has great tone and is a great guy. Most of the guitars he's built have Glendale hardware and he uses alot of different pickups, the one he finished here recently has Lollars in it with a mini humbucker in it. The bridges he's been using are the Glendale vintage type with the top and bottom shaved off and he's tried all the saddles Dale offers.
He's using a 50-watt Sewell Texaverb and he has a 100-watt for the bigger halls. If you're in the North Texas area, he's either playing with Deryl Dodd or John Christopher Davis, check him out.

I finally have seen Steve this week in San Antonio. We hung out a little while and talked tele (of course) and he got my number so he can call and see if some of the extra pickups he's got might be what I'm looking for. Really great guy, and awesome player. He was playing a Crate V30 with the Tone tubby speaker in it, and it sounded really good. I have the same amp with a Celestion, and if I could afford a tone tubby, I would after hearing his tone! He said that amp doesn't get everything he wants, and I have to agree about mine, but it's a really good bang for the buck deal. He was using a Keeley modded DD-3, two Zendrives, a Keeley Katana, Maxon Analog Delay, TR-2, an MXR Chorus ( the big yellow one), and a Boss reverb pedal that I forgot the model. His custom made tele's look great and sounded great. One great player with a great personality to match.

Steve is from Rhode Island. He sat in with one of the bands I was playing with in the early 90's at The Custom House in Providence. He had great tone and chops to boot!

At the time he was using a rack system for amplification, the details of which I've since forgotten. Steve was also using amps made by a local RI builder by the name of Manny Bettencourt. I'm not sure is he still does. Those of you that know him might ask?

When they had their trailer stolen, he lost a couple of awesome amps and guitars, so I'm not sure but that might be why he is using the cheaper Crate amp right now. I'm sure he is a little scared to get his expensive gear stolen again. He did talk very highly about Vintage Sounds Amps. He told me he had them build him a Super Reverb and it is amazing by his standards which I would think are pretty spot on!

He's using the Crate V30 to cut down on stage Volume at DD's request. The amps stolen from him were Sewell amps and I don't remember if they were 100 watt amps or 50's, he has a 50 watt head and cab with a Tone Tubby and a Hellatone 60 and he has a 100 watt combo with the same speakers. Steve is a great guy and one of my favorite players.

the 50 watt

100 watt
