Gotoh make great tuners that would look good on the 62' as well. Look the same as the Klusons.

Three in a row. Gotoh "klusons". #0648 in the Stew Mac catalog, ya gotta order 3 sets or more to get the good price. Warmoth has them, too (lefty or righty) with the one set price the same as Stew Mac's 3+ set price, but they ship much slower. Washington State versus southern Ohio.

IMHO ... The standard tuners that have been on AMSTD teles for the past 10 years or so are flawless. I have never had an issue with one of them!

Fender just switched from German made Schallers to Taiwanese Pings on the American Std and Highway One Guitars. Some say the Pings are as good as the Schallers were, but only time will tell if they hold up...

I would agree, except for the stupid "tension adjustment". Mine get loose. I'm thinking of switching to staggered klusons.

AllParts sells ivory knobs for the Fender die-cast Schaller tuners. I think StewMac has them, as well. But, I usually use Grover Vintage tuners.....

That's what I would expect from this model too.

What do you have on your 62 tele now?

Gotoh Klusons is what I would use as well.

I bought these and then fitted them with the Schaller pearloid keys.

I've got the guitar in my hand right now...and I can't tell what they are? There isn't any markings of any kind on them.

Hey, Scott, how many miles do you have on that MIJ? Is there any possibility these tuners came off a heavily used guitar?
As good as the Gotoh "klusons" are, all tuners wear out eventually. Trust me, the original kluson tuners on the 50's Fenders didn't work all that well once they'd seen a lot of action. I would not be surprised if the guts in that model of tuner have been re-engineered by Gotoh over their years of production.

My tech suggested I check out the TonePros ones. he said they had something in the inner workings that made them more stable - or should make them more stable. Or something. I didn't quite understand what he was getting at, and I haven't checked them out myself yet.

But, it is one more option. I have whatever Callaham ships with their hardware kit. Works fine for me.

Cheers,
Geoff

Sperzel locking tuners. They are not vintage looking, but they hold tight and restring in no time.

I honestly don't know. I traded a Epiphone Les Paul Jr for it about 6 years ago. The story the owner gave me was that he won it in a poker game in the early 90's. When I got it, it had a Humbucker bridge on it. The single coil pick up had been screwed to the body using dry wall screws. It wasn't a basket case, but needed some TLC. I've been restoring it ever since. New bridge pickup, new frets, new switch. The tuners are sticky and slip a lot when you do a lot of chicken pickin.

If I've felt the need to upgrade tuners I've always been partial to Grover Mini Rotomatics.

Those are Gotoh 'Klusons'. Just like on CS No-Casters.

I pulled a couple sets of Ping "klusons" off of 2 Bajas I have. The Bajas got Gotoh "klusons".

Well, I shimmed the Ping bushes with brass sleeving ( fits the 10.5 mm bore and creates a big solid bushing ) and put them on Squier 51 necks, but even then on those Squiers, the machine action is much more loose and liable to go off. The Gotohs really are the bee's knees, and at $ 28 per set, lefty (right hand guitars) or righty (left hand guitars) at Warmoth, this is a substantial bargain. I ordered 10 more sets this past week.
