New Build Project: A Pair of Thinlines
I'm waiting for the lacquer to cure on my twelve string, so I've started my next build project; a pair of Thinlines for myself and my niece.
Here's the first picture of the various body parts. ![]() The bodies are a composite design, laminated pine table tops for the center sections, Baltic birch voidless plywood (3/8") for the bottoms, and 1/4" book matched flame maple for the tops. The center sections are 1 3/8" thick to give the bodies a full 2" when assembled. Both will be double bound with bound F holes. My mock ups follow. Wish me luck!

Cool ............. Interesting sawdust minimalization technique.
I'm hoping the pink one is for your niece.

Some more work done last night and today.
The body for the green one assembled and trim routed. Lots of hand sanding to do then route the "f" hole and PUs. Given the materials, it's heavier than I expected at 4.5 lbs. I imagine at least part of that is due to the extra 1/4 inch thickness. ![]() The pink one is getting it's bottom glued on. I had an interesting thought. Given the composite construction, if they end up sounding really good, where does the "tone" come from? A question: Does anyone have a template that shows the control cavity route for this kind of thinline? I'd appreciate anything that can be provided.

Does anyone have information relating to how Warmoth's thinline pickguards fit a standard tele body?
Also, does anyone have a template or know a source of a template for the pickguard?

Well, I just went ahead and ordered a Warmoth pickguard, if nothing else it will help me make a template if I have to. On the otherhand, it might work just fine.

Both bodies are assembled, run around the router table (first time I've used one, definitely won't be the last) and rough sanded.
Here they are with 9 week old Montgomery admiring my work (riiiight), his brother, Patton, didn't want to stay on the table long enough to get in the shot. ![]() Some more hand sanding around the outside then route for pickups, 'f' holes and maybe necks. I'm going to use AllParts necks this time, but I have a really nice template for the MM neck I used on my first build. Does anyone know if an AllParts neck will fit a pocket routed for an MM without any heavy mods? If the AllParts neck is bigger I can sand or re-route the pockets, but if it's smaller I don't want to do anything until I have one of the necks in hand.

A lot of work today. A little work with a file and a piece of rolled up sand paper and I can start doing the bindings.
![]() Patton showed up for the photo this time.

I went to Home Depot with a sample stick and had them mix me some "Wood Rose" stain. It's pretty much as close a match as you can get to the pink lacquer the rest of the body will have, and if there is any difference, the separation by the binding will keep it from being noticeable.

Got the green one bound last night. I'll do the pink one tonight, then I'll lay off for 2 or 3 days while I polish, buff out, and assemble the Zodiac build.
![]() I misspoke in an earlier post. The kittens are 12 weeks old, not 9.

Warning! Do not, repeat, do not waste your money and time with Minwax's water based stains.
On hardwoods like maple they don't soak into the wood; they just sit on the top and pile up like a layer of latex paint. If you let it sit on the wood for more than about 2 minutes before wiping it off, it dries and turns into a gummy mess. If you wipe it off while it is still wet enough to wipe, it will not have stained the wood. After spending 2 hours trying to impart some color to the front of the pink thinline with no success, I put an even layer of the stain on and I'll let it dry in the garage till tomorrow evening. I'll try to sand it down to semi- transparency with 600 grit paper, but I have a hunch Maddy's guitar is going to end up with a pink lacquered top.

Pink top problem solved!
After sanding all the Minwax goop off the top of the guitar body, I mixed up a batch of Scarlet wood dye in hot water and squirted a large dollop of MIXOL Oxide White Universal Tint into it and mixed thoroughly. Viola! Hot pink wood die! And it has done a fantastic job of dyeing the top. Once I get it cleaned up and locked with some lacquer, I'll provide some pictures of the two tops. The green one looks excellent and it appears the pink one will to.

Well the pink one didn't turn out well after all. The grain pattern doesn't show well enough to make up for the flaws in the wood that do show, so Maddy's tele well be a solid pink. The green dye process worked exceptionally well however.
![]() ![]() I don't know if it's because of a different formulation in the plastic, or what, but I can say that the black binding was much harder to apply than the white was. I have a pickguard, an Allparts 22 fret neck, a set of pickups and a Gotoh bridge on hand so I'm going to start fitting parts and drilling holes next; Then I can start the finishing job. Building two at a time like this is pretty interesting, because you can run the job kind of like an assembly line.

The jigs worked about as well as could be expected. The backside ferrule holes aren't perfect, but they're awfully close. Its probably not possible to do better without a full size drillpress.

Done for the day. Bored the neck mounting holes and counter-sunk for neck ferrules then bored the holes for the jacks. Next I'll trim up the neck pockets and we're ready for lacquer.

I did a little sanding on my neck pocket template to match the Allparts neck, then trim routed the neck pockets. Perfect. These are coming together with fewer problems than the first two builds I did.
Here's a rough Idea of how the green one will look. I didn't lay the bridge in place since it's black, meant for Maddy's guitar.

Had to break and do the weekly grocery shopping (ch#!*t on a crutch, the prices are going up!). I masked the green one's binding and mounted a paint stick. I'm currently brushing on several thick coats of waterbased sanding sealer along the sides. Once they are sanded level and smooth, I should have a good hard surface to apply the primer and color coats to. When the sealer on this one dries I'll mount pinky on the stick and give it the same treatment.

The color coats are on the green one and its hanging in the heat of the garage for a day or two, then I'll sand it nice 'n purty and scrape the bindings.
![]() While it's cooking I'm masking the bindings on the pink one. I'm hoping to shoot it's color tomorrow. By the way, using auto pinstriping tape for masking, a tip I picked up here, seems to work extremely well.

Got the pink one masked and shot the first couple of coats of pink lacquer. Its hanging over night and will get several more coats tomorrow. Its an interesting light pink called "Simply Pink". Its going to take quite a few coats to cover all the wood grain.

Well I got the color on both of them; now I'll let them cook off in the garage till Wednesday or so (it gets well over 100 degrees in there this time of year) then I'll wet sand the color for a nice smooth base and they'll be ready for clear coating.

Well, I stripped the masking and got the back wet sanded on the green one before dark. Tomorrow I'll finish wet sanding then scrape the bindings and it's ready for the clear lacquer.
![]() I believe I've figured out how to put a little 'snap' into the pink one's body. I'm going to try to embed a little bit of 'stripper dust' in the clear; just enough to give it a little bit of sparkle.

I learned this a long time ago and all but forgot before I saw that vid in the Burst Thread here recently. If you've got lacquer on it, I thnk it would be worth the trouble to back up a bit for this effect. Just saying |

I tried that when I "dyed" it pink. I used a very dark red first and sanded back leaving the "flame" in the grain standing out. The problem seemed to be that when the pink dye was mixed and used, the red dye component would soak in and stain the wood, but the white pigment component just sat on top like a thin whitewash paint. The resulting color was wrong and showed the wood's flaws very well but almost no flame. But, on the other hand the wood didn't have that much flame to start with. I've repainted the pink body with a darker 'Ballet Slipper Pink' that looks better than the pink in the hanging photo.

Shooting Deft
I've got about 8 coats of deft on this one (I'm currently planning on calling it TeleZilla. It's that or the IguanaCaster.) I wet sand the surfaces after every fifth coat. You can see scuff marks where I've finger sanded out surface contaminants from the previous coat; it's not elegant but it works.
![]() Here it hangs next to the MaddyCaster which is simply cooking in the heat. I'll start sanding, scraping and shooting clear on it later this week. It's currently 105 degrees in the garage, and the hottest part of the day is still about an hour and a half away. Its a great place to cure lacquer. ![]() I have all the MaddyCaster's hardware and parts on hand and the headstock of it's neck painted pink, so it will be the first one finished, even though the green one's body is a little further along.
