'62 AVRI Appreciation

I am still quite new here. :-)
I see that '52 RI gets a lot of praises here. Recently, I tried a Hot Rod version of 52 and loved it. Quite different from the standard 52, but it still had that vintage vibe.

I recently tried a '62 reissue, which I wasn't quite aware of (still a newbie) But, wow, what an amazing axe! I A/B'ed with a 52 AVRI and was quite taken by the fact that I loved the tone of 62 more than 52's. It had slight less twang in the bridge position, but had a lot more air with sort of "throatiness" to the tone. Fit and finish, rosewood neck and C-shaped to 7.25R neck was a dream to play for my small hand.

I wanted to hear what others thought of this guitar compared to other popular vintage reissues. Is this a real sleeper? I looked around and most stores did not have it in stock. Usually 4-6 week wait. I assume its because of less popularity.

Love to hear what other players/owners had to say about the 62.

Welcome, verendus!

It's a nice coincidence that you should post this. Only this afternoon I was wondering how the neck on the '62 RIs felt in comparison to the '52 RIs. I have '52 RI from 1997 and while it's very comfortable for me I am not sure that I would like having a neck that it much thinner than that one, which is a bit thinner than the later '52 RIs.

Nevertheless, there is just something about those '62s that have had me intrigued for a while. I wish that more stores would stock them.

Want a bigger neck, check out the Thin Skins online, at either at Dave's Guitar, Wildwood or Music Machine.

A one piece maple "C" shaped neck with a modern 9.5" radius. Also the p/ups come wired modern instead of vintage.

The Thin Skins are about a $100.00 more than the standard AV'62RI's. Used ones do show up for sale at Dave's on a fairly regular basis. These are usually pretty clean and will save you about $350.00.

I like 'em, but then, I like 'em all...

Gee, thanks a million, csapo! I hadn't looked at Dave's site in a long time, and now you've got me GASing for about half a dozen of those Teles!

Actually, I don't mind at all. Not that much. Sort of. I think.

The 62 AVRI is one of my favorite two Teles, right up there with that 52 Hot Rod. I've got my eye on both of them and still cant decide which one to get since I can only have one right now. Boy, that 62 in the sunburst finish is dreamy...

Yeah, I like mine a lot too! The binding gives the AVRI a great look and I really like the weight. The neck is a little thin for my liking but I guess that is why a player with smaller hands finds them comfortable. I find I get hand fatigue much quicker with the thinner necks........I don't have huge hands, average I would guess! The few that I have played have been very consistant in tone and playability!

I was wondering about the same. C shape with 7.25"? But, strangely, it felt really comfortable. And 62's neck wasn't that much thinner than 52's. And more and more, I am liking 7.25 vintage fretted neck these days.

That looks like the one I played. It's a beautiful guitar. I've seen a very nice 'ice blue' once, but if I had to choose from all available colors, it would be the 3T sunburst.

Got both a 62 and a 52 Thinskin from Music Machine Guitars. I play them both about equally, but do seem to get more comments on the 62 (Fiesta Red). The neck pickup sounds better to my ears on the 62 for sure.

Something about the body binding just says "classy".

Another finish. This is an "American Designer Edition," but which is basically an AV62 with a few twists. I also had an Ocean Turquoise '62 for a short while and that was very pretty too!
