I'd bet anybody will make you one if asked Fralin, Novak, Lollar, you can't go wrong with any of these.

if you can find one on ebay get it. they sound wonderful. or, if you can, get the Baja. They're really great guitars.

There's a great recent You Tube where this gentleman, Mike Eldred, explains what the windings height and the nickel silver cover do to give the Twisted Tele all its unusual sound qualities. Includes video and sound illustrations of this pup against some of the others. There's a measure of exclusivity, generally to the Fender Custom Shop, that makes flooding the marketplace with this pup design a bad choice for Fender MIC. The presence of these 'premium' pickups, even if these are duplicates of the design made in Ensenada (I don't know), a big reason for the big demand for MIM Classic Baja Teles. That and the big chunky neck.

I have this in my CS Thinline - it's simply the best Tele neck pickup I've heard in person. It is clear, great output, deep tone without darkness or muddiness and responds well to the tone and volume controls. It is a great match for the Broadcster in the bridge, and I didn't think I'd like them that much.
It's almost like every Tele neck pickup you've heard before was through the radio or something.

I watched the vids of Mike Eldred with these latest teles that have the Twisted tele neck pups and I agreed with his description of the tone of the neck pup. It's more like a strat neck pup than a traditional tele neck pup.
But that doesn't mean that I didn't like it - I thought it sounded great! Just not as 'tele-like' as the more traditional vintage pups.

It's really good but.... to me it's not as good as the one Mare wound for me. It was part of a "Bakersfield Twang" set I ordered and wanted a bluesier neck pup.
The TT is really good but the Mare is just chimier and clearer. |

Maybe that thread has the video that Boris mentioned - with sound clips of the different type of pickups.
There's nothing quite like actually hearing the differences (instead of a description of the differences).

i agree. But to comment on the twisted tele, it is the best neck pickup i have had. Its true that it has a bit of a strat chime to it but it still says to me "thats a telecaster". Just not as traditional. Maybe that's what makes it so great! And it is paired lovely with the broadcaster in the baja.

Maybe i wasnt paying attention earlier because i was just listening for talk of the neck pups, but BOTH those pickups that he talks about are in the baja not just the twisted. Makes yer kind of proud to own a baja lol, although it really annoys me when people look down on my teles at music college because they say "made in mexico" and not usa or something on them. bastards...

The explanation about how the "twisted" neck pickup was designed was very informative. I had already decided that I did not want a brass-covered neck pickup in my Tele.
Now I am decided, I will use the Seymour Duncan SSL-4, the Strat Quarter-Pound Flat in the neck, to match the STL-3, the Tele Quarter-Pound Lead in the bridge. I have always loved the sound of a Strat neck pickup, and had no use for the Strat middle pickup. |
