Chrome/Nickel/Brass confusion

Hello there,
I'm in the very early stages of putting together my first partscaster (I've got a body so far) and I think I'm going to go for sort of a '48 prototype and '51 esquire mashup, but with cheap parts since I'm on a tight budget. It doesn't have to be any exact specs or wiring, I just want to get the "vibe" (without buying a squier...).

I've been looking for parts at guitarpartsresource.com and guitarfetish.com, both of which supplies cheap aftermarket parts. There are a couple of options though regarding materials and finishes.

So, anyway, my question is: what materials and finishes (chrome/nickel/brass/other) were used on the early borad/no/telecasters and esquires hardware (neck plate, strap buttons, control plate and so on)?

I'm sure some of you know this like the back of your hand. Also, any comments on the quality of the low-end products from the websites mentioned above would be appreciated.

Thank you's!
