Start with an Esquire :-)
From what I have read over the years, he's a Gear Dog and changes all the time, looking for the elusive "perfect tone".

Pete is now into hollow bodies with Bigsbys.
Look for a new Reverend Guitars Pete Anderson Signature at NAMM now.

esquire + black face deluxe. (tele with bridge pickup would be fine too)

Pete's hands and brain.

he played dual professionals some back then too... but only on the big stages.

From Pete's own message board:

"my stings are Daddario's 9/11/15/28/39/49...I like the old boss purple analog delay pedal (dm2). I set the slap on a 16th note, very quick. I like fender-sounding amps..treble on 5/middle 10/bass3.5/spring reverb 2.5. I use the hybrid picking technique which I explain in my Roots Rock Workshop video...Thanx/good luck/Pete"

Mids on 10! That's his trick. Also, one of his Deluxes got modded to run with 6L6s and a mid control that he always turns up to 10. He of course sounds like himself through the Line6 Vetta too, but I bet he still keeps turning up the mids to 10, lol.

Pete - the early years...

The years from 84-89 are my fav Pete years with Dwight. He was still playing through real amps then. Pete got me hooked on D'Darrio 9.5's. That's all I use now. Like everyone else said, he played through two BF Deluxe Reverbs with Middle added. He used the Boss DM2's and 3's early on but switched to the DD3 in the 80's.

Also notice his 59 Esquire (the black one) and his 56 red sparkle Tele all had modern 6 saddle American Standard bridges on them!

Pete on the Austin City Limits DVD with Dwight is great.

Great answers....

i always thought that the middles are the bad guys...

Great i will try those options. At Austin City Limits if i am not wrong he used a Twin Reverb.

I really like Pete works. I really enjoy that DVD live at Austin City Limits... i think the best guitar part is on 1000 miles. Great stuff. He plays for the song and that is not easy to find in a guitarist. I think Paisley on his last album forgot this.

Thanks

I practically memorized a Pete article in GP mag from that era.

two BF dlx rvbs w/ EV, 6l6's and mid mod.

Tube echoplex.

6 saddle bridges, he said they added "body".

he said don't be afraid of the treble, all the magic is in the treble.

that article is pretty much the reason i play tele's today. he's definitely the reason I love 80's MIJ teles so much.

he played an 80's MIJ bound sunburst esquire A LOT during that time. he's also also the reasons i want one of those MIJ esquires today.

Last time I saw him with Dwight he played the start as much as the tele.
He had a white strat if I rmember right. He was awesome too. I will never understand how dwight could let him go. Dwight ain't dwight in my book without Pete.

You can get that wonderful tone with a dlx reverb with the mid-mods and a good tele treble pickup. I did the mod to my '65 dlx reverb and upgraded the speaker to a Weber and ran both my '60 custom tele and an anderson hollow-t thru it and could not tell a difference, both sounded great. Heavy bottom E & A strings help too. Experiment with the harmonics around the 1 & 2nd fret on the lower E to complete the picture.

Pete is using Line6 onstage today. He got most of his chops from playing blues. In a GP article he said that he first starting using them with pro-tools. He had them send the Deluxe they used for the model and A/B'd them. That's why he uses Line 6 now.

Yep, there are a few Nashville cats that like to dime their mids on a Fender. I've always liked mine with the mids cranked too, I guess it's because I'm a Marshall-to-Fender convert!

In addition to the mid-range mod, Anderson loves the sound of that bright cap in the Deluxe Reverb, the one so many snip off. He likes to have the bright switches in his Twin Reverbs modded to reflect the value of the bright caps in the Deluxes, a far more subtle and useful treble boost for a tele. He also loves EVM12L speakers which put out a lot of bass, so he rolls most of it off at the amp.

Another aspect of his technique is the use of heavy pick and acrylic nails, so when he "grabs" the strings with his fingers, the attack is very pick-like.

My favorite Pete Anderson playing is on "Dwight Live," even if he does get a little overzealous with the wang bar.

That's true. He and his wife engineer Sally Browder were interviewed in the Jan / Feb 2007 issue of TapeOp magazine.

She pretty much refuses - I know, I recoiled too - to mic a guitar amp anymore according to the interview. She's all about the POD, as is Pete. They even recorded some Dwight stuff that way.
