Baja telecaster - jack socket
Hi everyone, after many years of prevaricating about buying a tele I've finally bitten the bullet and joined the club. I tried all types in the store (Dawsons in Manchester) and finally settled on a choice between a '52 reissue or the Baja model with the black pickguard. I chose the Baja partially on cost (less than half the price) but also I liked the variety of sound it offered especially the bridge and neck in series. Never having owned a telecaster before I can't really comment on comparing it to other teles but I love it! The quality and sounds are excellent (my amps are Peavey Classic 30 and a Marshall DSL201). My only gripe is that the jack plug does not locate very securely in the socket ie the slightest knock and it comes out. Rather than take it back to the store I am sure I can sort this out by adjusting the contacts, but I don't know if I'm being stupid here but how do you remove the cup which contains the socket? Any help would be very appreciated.

If memory serves me correctly the Bajas use the cheaper MIM output jack...you will need to unscrew the control plate...and require a 1/2" socket to remove the jack retaining nut....I would replace w/ a USA Switchcraft Jack, and put your problem behind you....$2.95 and a sure cure.

As stated, I'd leave the cup in place. The socket can be removed quite easily with the control plate off. Put an old towel on top of your Tele to protect it from scratches, remove the two control plate screws and pull the controls out carefully. After you remove the retaining screw for the socket, you can fish the socket back out of the control route.
Also, as stated, do yourself a favour and solder a Switchcraft jack in there. It's all very easy to do. |
