For a complete guitar without the Bender or extremely expensive pickups, you're probably looking at starting around $1800-$2400. With the Bender and top of the line pickups and hardware, around $3000....... But I could be off.... they are truely worth it!!

I found this import Tokai while surfing the net tonight at work. Look at the fade on this? Weren't the Tokai's finished in Poly like the MIJs?

The Tokai Paisley and Floral look much better than the Fender MIJs in my book. But I don't know why. They command a pretty high resale price too.

I agree. But what were they possibly doing differently at the Tokai factory than the Fender one?

That Tokai pic looks to be the "Right Stuff" to my eye, but it is hard with that resolution and not being close up...But no doubt it is a lot different to the Fender Japan version...The Tokai looks pretty good!

Here's an old MIJ from the 80s of similiar vintage to that Tokai I posted earlier
This paisley pattern is different than the one on my '08 CIJ. The green leafs are more of a blueish green on the '08. It still doesn't look as nice as that Tokai though.

Here's more looks at a Tokai Paisley. This one doesn't seem to be as worn as the one I posted earlier today. http://www.terra.dti.ne.jp/~kaztak/guit.htm. The more purple looking finish around the edges gives it more of an aged look. I'm betting those Tokais are finished in poly like the Fenders but they are just a different color to begin with.

Hi, I have an original one I bought in 1969 and there is original wallpaper out there, a woman bought enough to paper an entire room but never did and some of that shows up in places, I never found any, the remakes mess up on the clear coat and the shading on the edges, there is a silver primer first on the edges then the purple/pink and it does not cover too far past the edge, maybe an inch at most, the remakes go 2 inches. The paper is thick not like al foil, and it is texured, the amount of green is different on the original too. last they dont age well (some of which is a good thing) the clear coat cracks and even seperates, I had to glue it back so a chip wouldnt get snaged and rip off. Most of all the neck, the old tele necks are amazing, get an original 68 and thro out the new one.

I'll get better pics later on.
yes I did modify it many years ago, doesnt bother me Im never going to sell it anyway, still old friends from the '70s that I havnt seen in years ask me about that tele. and I can put it back to almost original.

FD--thanks for the Tokai paisley posts-I've never seen those before. They look far more "real" than the MIJ Fenders to me, especially with the 68 style maple cap neck rather than a skunk stripe. Too cool.

Big Post this one!

I could never work out why Fender used the name "Antigua" when there was a much more marketable terminology which fits with their M.O..."Cloudburst"

Mike, I make no comment about the two piece thing I am only interested in knowing whether the stuff offered currently is the same as what it was originally...Personally, I couldn't care less how the the "Wallpaper" was manufactured, just how the end result looks and works...I think that you are probably right though...

Hi!

New member here... but long time Tele lover!

I have always liked the Paisley and Floral finishes! Here is a pic of my Paisley Reissue collection from 2004;

I have sold off all of the Pink Paisley MIJ and CIJ guitars (except the 80's Strat) because I got a couple Crook Custom guitars, which are WAY better instruments and put the Fender Japan stuff to shame!

Here are a few pics...

The one on the left is actually a Crook body with my 1968 Tele neck, bridge, control plate, knobs, and neckplate. I bought the whole 1968 guitar in the 80's - but the previous owner had routed and stripped the body. He had also replaced the original pickups with Schecter pickups. I asked Bill Crook to build me a body, refret the neck (the 3rd set of frets I have had on it!), and wire it with an Adder in the neck position and a Peter Florance VooDoo in the bridge. That is one fantastic guitar! The one on the right is a total Bill Crook built relic Paisley that I bought on eBay. The previous owner had the headstock reshaped to look like a Fender. I would have rather kept the Crook shape.

The last pic shows the two Paisley Teles with another Crook that I had Bill build last summer. I also have a Crook Strat and another Crook on order!

Welcome and way to go! I have a non-relic Crook body with mostly '68 parts myself -- the neck is s '73 I thought I was buying a '69 neck on Ebay, and fooled myself with the info in the auction and bought too quickly. But I love it.

My Crook body hasn't aged at all, and still looks brand new. I'd rather have one of his relic bodies to go with the old parts. Maybe someday I'll sell this body and get a newer relic.

Love your collection. Enjoy the TDPRI!

How old it is? Yours looks about hundred times better than the relic, orangish, unevenly faded stuff. Ok, the originals turn into orange unevenly but there's something fishy about this kind of colour. Yours is more James Burton, relic is more Brad Paisley.

Well, thet's just me but I'm more into relicing the hard way - 10 years with a touring bunch of hippies or one and a half with a HC punk band.

Give me a call when someday comes.
