That's Why I Like My Telecaster!
I post a thread like this about every eight months it seems. I have a bunch of different guitars and my Gretsch has become my #1 for the most part. But last night for the weekly jam I brought the '52 RI with the Barden neck pickup. It was three guitar players, a mando player, a guy playing bass or keys and a percussionist. The music's mostly Dead, Dylan and CSN&Y and it can go from some of the most gawd-awful gang vocals to some of the sweetest stuff ever.
Anyway, except for one song when I pulled out the Strat for slide, I played the Tele and pushed myself to try different things. Use different chorus settings, use the other distortion pedal. But the heart of it all is the Tele. We were pulling songs out of the air and Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" popped out of the eithers. I used the volume pedal and played pedal steel bends. It just sounded so RIGHT! The mando player and I played complimentry lines and the singer nailed it. There is nothing you can't play on a Tele if you just work with it a little. A slight turn of the tone control will give you something different from what you had before and the different pickup positions almost seem like different guitars. That was the most fun I've had playing electric guitar in a while. James Burton to Jimi Hendrix on one guitar! And that's why I like my Telecaster. Tell me why you like yours!

We are! That was such a bizzare round about deal to get your guitar and my mando. That guy was so trusting and kind. And you certainly know that "The music that's coming out of this guitar is way beyond my skill set" feeling. Sometimes it's just magic.

I like my Squier Tele because it sounds just like what I want to hear from a Tele! Twang on the bridge pickup picking with the heel of my hand on the saddles, nice and round on the neck pickup picking closer to the neck. Smooth with both pickups doing alternate picking. Crystal clean with lots of sparkle when I have the 5150's Pre throttled back. Lots of growl when I turn up the gain on the Rhythm channel. Out and out bark when I hit the lead channel.
And that's just my Squier Tele. Don't get me started on the one with the DiMarzio PRE-B1 bridge pickup and P-90 neck pickup. Things just explode then. And the Esquire? Let's just say it ain't a one-trick pony. And through other amps? I gotta get better and get a way to post sound clips. |

Teles really are the coolest all around guitars. Yeah, we know how great they sound, and how simple the controls are, but they sure are pretty as well. And, they're a piece of American history really. They harken back to a simpler time (at least they do in my mind). I was sold on Teles from day one.

I've only had mine for a few months now but I too am in love with it. I can't quite put my finger on one thing I like in particular.... I love the feel, playability, sound, weight, shape, tone and of course the looks!!! I'm so happy I finally own a Tele!

So simple, yet, so versatile. Feels good in your hands, feels good against your body and sounds so good to your ears! It's just pure mojo with strings!
Of all the guitars I've owned over the years, nothing beats a Tele for an "all around" guitar that can do it all! Doesn't even matter where it's made, or if you put it together yourself; it still comes out a Tele! Thanks, Leo. |
