Yep, that's the only MF public store. I had to talk them into getting a couple of them out of the warehouse for me to try. Too bad you weren't ES-339 hunting; I counted eight of them on the wall. If you exclude the Dean "cactus garden" guitars, that has to be some kind of record for most of one model on display in MF.

I assume it is a standard fit but keep in mind it is a 5-hole, not an 8-hole. so you'd have to go with some 3rd party (i.e. not fender) to find one in mint... or pretty much anything but black or white. warmoth will definitely have a good selection of guards

Received an email from MF this morning that the guitar shipped.
Hurray! Then another email saying the Superchamp XD was on backorder. Arrggg! So I called MF to cancel the amp order, just figuring I'd buy one at GC so I can hear my guitar when I get it. The girl then told me it was only one of the "free cables" I get with the amp that was on backorder. So I said "FORGET THE CABLE -- SHIP THE AMP!!" So I guess I'll have the guitar a day or so before the amp. Oh well. |

Went to my local Long & McQuade today and they'd never heard of these things, nothing in the computer at any of their stores, etc. Fella said he didn't even know whether they'd ever get them in,but he'd order me one if I wanted to buy one without trying it first. I passed. Someone here has to get them in eventually.

L&M are good to deal with. If you order one in and pass on it that's not a problem. I put $20 down to hold one for me that they had already had coming in. If I pass on it, no problem. Someone else will buy it. I was with a friend the other day at L&M who ordered in a Gibson LP '68 RI (or something like that) worth about $2,200 (it had a blem of somekind) and he passed on it. The store had no issue with that.

Chris Gill, the guy in charge at Squier told me that in the past they would announce stuff at NAMM and it would be 3 months before it was in the stores. So, FMIC tried to get some stuff into stores right around the start of NAMM and so they presented these to the much bigger retailers a few months ago to get the pump primed. For everyone else they were being debuted at NAMM for them to place orders.
He said that one shipload had been received and spread out all over the US and the rest of world. Specifically, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden and Japan. And that a second much bigger shipload was already on the water just days or weeks away from delivery in the US. But clearly it's going to take a short while for these to be distributed all over. By the way, Chris told me that the Classic Vibe series was supposed to come out before the Vintage Modifieds came out, but due to some corporate "stuff" they were delayed until after the Vintage Modifieds. Also, they look and feel every bit as good in the "flesh" as they do in the photos. They are truly a step above other Squiers and with the new Fendery logo and all they even better than many of the other Squiers. They are pine, but they are not light. The one I played for a minute or less at NAMM (of course they picked a good one for NAMM) was between 7 and 8 pounds (guesstimate) and had a flamey neck. The C-shaped neck felt great too, not too thick and not too thin. The place was was too noisy for me to tell if it was resonant or not. Poly on the body and the neck. Oh, and the width at the nut is 1.625" same as the MIM 50's Classic, so it's not some smaller cut down model. Vintage String-thru bridge with copper saddles, medium jumbo frets, 9.5" radius neck (as opposed to a 7.25 for the MIM 50's Classic), "vintage-style" Alnico 3 p'ups, single ply pickguard, simulated bone nut and "vintage style" tuners -- though I didn't think to look at them.. Notice the really nice tint on the neck too! No shoe polish needed on this baby. And that white body is transparent. There was wood showing through. Attached is a bigger photo from NAMM. I don't want to go on too much about these new Squiers but let me tell you, this guitar will seriously increase the image of this old "cheaper" brand.
Look at it this way, $299 for a Squier '50's Classic Vibe Telecaster and $299 for a Fender Superchamp XD amp and just about anyone can get into a good guitar and a good Tube amp for just $598 COMBINED. Man, things are looking up for young players on a budget... or even us old guys. And, can you start thinking of the Mods you could do to yours??? |

hadn't really thought of that, but fender is making it easier to get good gear for cheaper prices. fender aside, the valve junior stack is also one of the best deals in recent years as far as amps go

Ya I hate that June is the month they picked as fender month. It is so tempting to just purchase 1 or 2 of these little buggers and just tell myself "oh just don't worry about it until next year!"...this is a good way to get oneself in trouble :/ I may end up doing it but I am pushing it off as long as possible. Not only that, but then I have the hard decision of whether or not I should get the 50's strat, tele, or duosonic. I think the tele is the coolest but then again I already have a tele and I don't have a strat and the duosonic is just plain cool...may be the perfect compliment to my baby hands.

I can't bite on this for one reason, and this is the ONLY reason, as of 6:35PM today, that I haven't ordered and started WWIII with my wife yet:
Color. (My excuses change hourly, but this is the latest one.) I have enough guitars to keep me busy already, but if this came in NATURAL--forget it. I would have pulled the trigger immediately. I'm dying for a natural wood, and if they had one, I would buy and Esquire it in a New York minute. |

Funny you say that cause I always complain about the same thing. I live in Allen and I'm forced to go the the Plano GC to get strings and such and I can't stand hearing the punk kids testing guitars through the marshalls at excessive volumes. I try to bolt in and out as fast as possible.
*Sigh* Oh how I hate chain music stores... |

Attention Central Va. TDPRI's . . .
Charlottesville Music has one of the new Vintage Vibe Teles in the store. I got to handle it that past weekend. I already own two Squire teles, a 2006 Standard and a 2002 Fat Tele, both with replacement necks, which is why it's still there. If I *was* in the market for a new Tele, that one would have gone home with me. It felt hefty, but not heavy. The neck was brilliant, no fret sprout and dressed well. The 9's on it felt really rubbery. I think at least that guitar would sing with heavier strings on it. As has been said here before, the wood grain does show through and looks great. I didn't plug it in, although I should have. I was really trying not to buy the beast
Just showing that some of the smaller stores are getting the new gits in. If someone was looking for a first good guitar, and didn't know they could replace a neck (this knowledge is not well known to the non-Fender crowd, which includes alot of beginners), this would be an excellent start. I also think it would make a pro pretty proud also. |

i think the MIM is calling my name. 12mo same as cash, medium jumbos, hot pickups, etc :) although that is weird that it is crafted just for me...

I'm not too sure what you mean. I installed an Allparts PG with a hole for the neck pickup and 5 screw holes to hold the pickguard on the guitar. It took only a minor tweek at the neck pocket section of the PG and all the SCREW HOLES lined up fine. I hope that helps ya
