Thinking of selling my Tele...

...and buying a different Tele! I have the '72 Deluxe RI with various mods, but it's just not doing it for me anymore... I think I need some single-coil clarity and bite. Maybe a Highway 1, or a Baja, or dare I say it, an Esquire? Hmm...

This is always a tough situation. I ran into this earlier this year where my Partscaster just wasn't doin' it for me anymore. My Casino had overtaken every aspect of my playing and I got to the point where I didn't even want to pick up the Partscaster anymore. I think what you're running into is a natural thing. It happens to a lot of us and the best advice is to just put your Deluxe away for a while and play something else. Then go back to it after a couple of months and see if you feel the same way. Thats what I did, and I ended up keeping my Partscaster.

Nah, porkie, I think it goes beyond "tired of my tele" I really do.

The 72 Thinlines and 72 Deluxes lack the crucial bridge assembly and bridge pup configuration that motivates so many of us. They are kinda exotic and cool looking, but they are not the real drug.

I don't see any problem with a stack bucker in the vintage bridge spot, but when you put a hardtail strat bridge assembly on there, something is definitely lost.

I really believe a Classic 50's or 60's, or Classic Baja, MIM James Burton or Muddy Waters or a Deluxe Nashville (with mods) will get you to feeling all right.

I really think you're right. I've bought and sold a few guitars in my 47 years, and I think it's time. The Deluxe is a cool guitar, but it just can't do what some of the "real" tele's do (witness the Campilongo/Norah Jones video--not that I could play like that!).

My other main guitar is an old Gretsch with a single neck pickup, and it sounds so great through my old amps--sparkle, bite, personality. It has an amazing range of tones, considering its simplicity. I think that's what I'm after at this point.

Can someone quantify the difference in sound(s) between an Esquire and a standard Tele for me? I've never seen one in person.

Well, there's more sound getting out of the read pickup in the esquire.
1. There's the position-1 sound, bypassing all tone nd caps which gives more guts! then, there's no front pup and this influences the tone in two ways:
2. No front pup tone
3. No front pup to rob all the juicy 1st and 2nd order harmonics.

That's about it!

Well... if I ever get time, I'm heading to the local Fender emporium to try guitars, but here are the top three I'm thinking of:

Baja Tele

or...

Highway One Tele

...or maybe this one:

Esquire

...For the record, I'm mostly playing rockabilly-ish stuff and blues these days. I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on any of these guitars. I'll be playing either through my Reverberocket or my blackface Champ.

Out of those I'd get the 50's Esquire...It has the most trad vintage specs. You could always throw a neck pickup in it later if you must play blues.
