Too Much Fun!

I just got home from seeing Bill Kirchen and Too Much Fun playing at the Globe Theatre in beautiful Berlin, Maryland (a half block from my apartment), and man, they absolutely tore the roof off the place!

Bill was playing his holy grail Telecaster (equipped with Bardens) through a Talos amp (two knobs! Killer tone!), with a pedal board containing a green Tube Screamer, a Boss Delay, a Holy Grail reverb, and a tuner.

They were great all night, but in particular "Hot Rod Lincoln" had a ton of cool stuff mixed in. In addition to all the great guitar quotes, Bill had Johnny quote a bunch of great bassists (Duck Dunn, James Jamerson, John Entwistle...) and Jack do some Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. It was sooooooo cool!

Too much fun, indeed!

Yeah, Bill and crew are one of the greatest shows you're likely to find...did Bill play the trombone?

Bones

Yep, he and Jack (playing his snare drum) paraded around the place, and up into the balcony while Johnny stayed on stage and played his bass and the kick drum. Consumate showmen and musicians, those guys.

I haven't seen him in years and ...

...plan to catch him at the Grille in Actiondale, er, Annandale before too long since he heads to Sunny California in January.

I used to like it when he mixed up his play list and play Nick Lowe and Dylan tunes. One time he played a tune off of Highway 61 Revisted and it sounded like ZZ Top meets Bob Dylan, just tremendous. And his cover of "Whats so funny about peace, love and understanding".

Funny story - he's a very down to earth, talkative guy. I heard him tell someone he was heading off to England to play on a Nick Lowe album and apparently Nick was in the recording studio helping out Mark Knophler and Mark was willing to reciprocate the favor. Nick said he already had a guitarist. When Mark asked who, Nick said Bill Kirchen to which Mark replied "Who"?
