New Guy
Hi,
I'm 'JazzGuy' (my real name is Brian). A 73' Tele was my first electric -purchased for me by my Dad (in 74') after a sufficient season of labor in his wood-working business. I really, REALLY wish I still had that guitar! I love all kinds of Tele music but, I hope to build a "parts" Tele sometime in the year or so. Hence, I'm looking forward to learning more about Tele parts/mods folks here have experience with! Peace and Twang, Brian |

Welcome, Brian! You'll love a Tele even more through that Carr (great amps!). Yeh, let us know the type of jazz you're into. Hang around this place much and you'll be picking up a Tele sooner than you thought ...

This is the place! Keep your eyes peeled for threads by partsbuilders. Lots of of piece together Teles, and love doing it. Some get all the pieces separately, other buy a basic Tele and swap out parts one by one. Either way it's a blast. Welcome aboard!!

Welcome, Brian. You'll get all the info you need here to build that partscaster. Or you could do like I did and get a lowly Squire Affinity (which are actually great guitars) and mod the heck out of it. Then you'd have a tele and your 335!

I'm unfortunately one adult dude who suffers from a bit of distraction toward different styles of guitar music. I love many styles of guitar, but Jazz is certainly a mainstay. I've played/studied more traditional Jazz Standards/forms on and off for about 33 years, but I also love great country playing (which can be pretty dern "jazzy"), Tele-rock styles, and certainly BLUES as well. I also studied Classical guitar formally for 6 years, but have pretty much abandoned that. I've just come off a hiatus of not playing any Electric Guitar for about 5 years (did play some Bass though). I love the playing of Danny Gatton and Brent Mason, two "Tele-terrors" who definitely can serve up some pretty nice jazz! Brian |

My favorite Tele-Jazz player is definitely the Canadian Ed Bickert who was with Paul Desmond for many, many years. I believe Ed does use a humbucker in the neck position of his Tele. I want to stay with the traditional chrome-covered single coil in the one I plan to build (can always play my 335 if I need a humbucking sound). I grew up mostly in Branson, MO (from age 10 on) where my extended family is originally from. This was before Branson became "trendy" like it is today. My dad fixed up an old 55' Fender Pro for me to play with the Tele. After a couple of years I traded this rig for an Gibson 150 and some "boot $$" because I thought it made a better Jazz guitar. Dad (may he rest in peace) would take me to hear Jerry Reed and other lesser known country pickers who definitely had some "funk" in their sound. But around the same time I got into early Larry Carlton (with the Crusaders, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell), etc. and wanted the more west coast fusion/blues tone that a fat Gibson could provide. Two regrets from this: 1) that I let go of my Tele 2) that I did not take country playing more seriously Brian Last edited by JazzGuy; May 20th, 2008 at 07:56 PM. |

Welcome to the forum. Let's go over a few rules, if you acquire a new guitar it is mandatory to post pictures. I think we are collectively leaning towards making build threads mandatory too if you are creating a new tele from scratch. Just kidding of course, but we would like to see pictures of guitars and builds in progress. I think you will find this site is a plethora of knowledge on not only the telecaster, but other areas as well. We have several notable players and collectors on here, as well as, master luthiers that will be able to answer any and all build questions. Plus you don't have to wait forever for a reply. Generally, posts are responded to within a day. The demeanor of this forum is great, and you don't have to worry about people spouting off a lot of nonsense. If a post doens't make sense, one of the experts will jump right in and correct it.
Colt P.S. Do yourself a favor and don't listien to me, I am not one of the afore mentioned experts. |

Hiya Jazz! I have a deep love for jazz on a tele. My fave is (obviously) Ed Bickert and Ted Greene. It's amazing how, in spite of common sense, a tele is one of the best guitars for jazz there is. I had my 335 phase too. But I grew up playing rock and could never get the hang of a true jazzbox. I had an a couple L5s, then downgraded to a 335 to get to a small size, then to a Les Paul, and then ended up back at a Tele. I don't really know why, but a tele with a humbucker in the neck is really sweet for jazz. I actually just built my first tele from scratch. before I even began I had a tele for jazz in mind. All the hardware I bought was to give me the best jazz sound. It currently has Thomastik flatwound 14s on there.
Most of the people here are mainstream tele players (of course) but there is a small, but loyal bunch of jazz enthusiasts on here too. I feel like a goober because I always dismissed country music as a sort of...well, I won't use the name. Suffice it to say, I thought country was crap. But I forced myself to watch the country music awards (last year, not this year) and saw Brad Paisley do a solo. I have since been hooked. Specifically on Brad's playing. And damn it all, the music is actually really cool too. And Brad has a couple very jazz-based tunes too. Needless to say, they're not his hits. But he abandon the twang and lay down a really sweet jazz sound when he wants. Anyway, welcome to the board. There's TONS of people here that can help you build your guitar. There's a few luthiers on here too. When I built my tele I had every single question I asked on this forum answered politely, quickly, professionally, and with enthusiam. It's a great bunch of people on this forum and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by all the help you receive regardless of what question you ask. Welcome!

Hi Brian, welcome from another newish member!
This really is a great place, and a helpful bunch of people, as i'm sure you know by now. I love jazz too, and not just guitar, in fact some of my favourite jazz recordings don't have any guitar at all!(Shock! Horror!) Ted Greene has got to be my favourite tele/jazz guitarist right now, I just picked up his CD Solo Guitar. Amazing.

Great looking 335, Brian! You are brave ... :-)) I'd post a pic of my '59 CS dot 335 with a Swart, but ...
Seems to be several tdpri folks in our area - eventually we'll have to have a get-together like the tdpri Texans are doing ... |

Other than that she's stock and running D'addario Chromes (flatwounds) .011-.050 with a wound G. I like flats on the 335 but the Tele I plan to build will have rounds, probably .010-.048 (or thereabouts on the low end) with a plain G. |

Hello Jazzguy.
I love to hear Jazz and occasionally play it, but Im from the Danny Gatton school (except with 0.5% of the talent and application) of it being blues with 'wrong' notes. Good to have you here. Steve
