I enjoyed that. Thanks for posting. He's got to be one of the greatest songwriters of his generation.

BTW, how did his case ever turn out? Didn't he get into a scrape a while back and shoot somebody? I'm pretty sure it was self defense, but i never heard the official outcome.

Billy Joe is responsible for the outlaw country movement in American country music, pretty much a big deal. It came in the form of Waylon's 1973 release "Honky Tonk Heroes". There are lot's of stories surrounding the recording, let's just say due to the persistence of Billy Joe, Waylon saw the light and we have the first anti-Nashville recording and a new attitude in Country Music with that release in '73, something that we sorely need today.

"Unshaven" recorded right here in Atlanta at Smith's Old Bar, is an amazing CD, has Billy Joe's son Eddie Shaver at his best. imagine "ACDC meets Hank Williams". Highly recommended.

The drummer is Lisa Pankratz - used to be with the Derailers. Killer drummer, cool gal & VERY easy on the eyes.

Eddie and Kerry Marx are the ones that talked me into getting a Boogie. I remember when Eddie was a kid and played a Marshall half stack in his dad's country band. Not much cooler than that. And Billy Joe's missing fingers fraeaked my wife out when he grabber her the first time. He's a cool dude. It's nice folks on this forum know him and appreciate him.

My favorite part of that CD is the very first tune-"Hottest thing"-he comes out to introduce a song and Eddie says "no lets do hottest thing." He was simply one of the best country pickers on the block. Sad loss.

i've toured with lisa for years... i don't think she's playing on this recording... her style is very recognizable... she's a great drummer and a lot of fun to play with... the basplayer in the video is her husband brad fordham... one of the best in town... great rhythm section... tj

I thought that having Robert Duvall playing backup was a cool touch.

I consider Shaver to be in rarefied air, up all by himself as a unique writer - as just a natural God-given talent, and a rhyming madman, to boot. No wonder Duvall is a fan.

I guess Billy Joe got out of the trouble without to much problems. I played the club where he shot the guy a few months after that. I didn't know it until I got there and someone said "that's right where Billy Joe Shaver shot that guy."
