I'm a new 52 reissue tele owner...goodmorning

Hello everyone....last thursday I recieved a 52 reissue on my doorstep...I've always wanted one..and finally pulled the trigger. I think I got a good deal...1147$ from music 123....slightly blemished but new with some pre-made pickguard scratches and one very minor ding...but regardless..all the case candy unopened..nicely set up...and nice playing guitar.

I once owned a black american standard tele from about 92 or 93...but I've always loved the look of the 52.

for reference I play it thru a Dr. Z maz 18 combo...and my other main guitars are a 18 year old Gibson es-347 I bought new...and also a mim Robert Cray sunburst strat....I've owned tons of strats and the occassional les paul here and there....but I've pretty happy with what I have now..but always want to add more, ofcourse!

I have a Hombrew tweed 4x10 bassmen that I built a few years ago...that I'm looking forward to gettin some new tubes and biasing it the give the tele a run thru.

anywho...I do have a question....is there a difference, other than the slotted pegs on the 52's tuners to other vintage styled tuners, like on the Robert cray strat....I mean that guitar was about 500 bucks less...just wondered if there was a qualitly difference between the two.....they look pretty much identical...just wondering?

well...I've managed to dribble my first beer on the tele..lol....guess it's a keeper

thanks all....happy mothers day...Mike

Welcome and congrats on an absolutely great guitar ... I'd say you have reached the top right there ...

As to your question: The '52 RI has Gotoh tuners (as all American Vintage models), while the MIM vintage style models have Ping.

I have both brands myself, and so far (3 years) I've seen no difference, but those with more experience maintain that the Gotohs usually will outlive the Pings.

Beer is OK I guess, but whiskey does a better cleansing job ...

The Jimmie Vaughan sig is the only MIM with the better, Gotoh "klusons", the Cray, all the Classics including the Baja, those are all the cheaper Pings.
All the USA AV guitars use the better Gotohs.

The performance difference is subtle; a lot of it has to do with hand feel, aesthetics, and long term durability. Sometimes a batch of Pings will be spot on and the difference will seem very small on a new guitar. Out of the hundreds of Gotoh "kluson" machines I have, 2-4 are not perfect. Pings are getting better, I think.

I have changed out the Pings on 7 or 8 MIM guitars and replaced them with Gotoh "klusons" as I really do prefer them. Not especially easy as the shaft sizes and bushing sizes are different.

Tell them apart by examining the shape of the button, and notice how the no business end of the button shaft sticks out a 1/16th on the Ping, but is close to flush on the Gotoh.

Enjoy that rig.

New Tele!

Yep! Tele's are made to have Beer spilt on them. It opens up the tone I believe

My 52RI cost a fortune and its already got paint wore off it, Dings, a Chunk out of the neck, and all the screws & chrome are rusting. (its only 3 years old). These guitars aren't for RESALE...they're made to be used & abused. Enjoy every minute of it.

Am I wrong, or isn't that one of yours a limited edition of 60 in Black?

I joined you. Got my first Tele this weekend - a 52 RI (it's a 2002 I got used). I played ton of Teles and the 52 just was right for me. It prefectly compliments my '67 Gretsch Tenneseean for the Alt Country band I'm in.

Owl....
Congrats on the '52. Good choice. Probably as close to the old 70s you've been Jonesin' for, as you'll find at GC (other than the often overpriced vintage stuff they occassionally have). Good luck with
her! Be sure to post a pic or two.
