Another Ebay Beauty! (Scam)

Hey fellow Tele-addicts, have a look at this...
http://cgi.ebay.com/1953-FENDER-ESQUIRE-1959-TELECASTER-VINTAGE-GUITAR
Now this is a real treat.

Perhaps an old Fender Esquire or Tele body, that's been horribly refinished, someone has put a P90 in the front, and routed the body out...

But the neck is obviously new, as is the neck mounting plate.

Can you believe thew asking price?

There are a lot of things wrong with this guitar and his description but a scam is something completely different than presumptions and mistakes.

Good point BUT..... your trying to sell a guitar for $12k's isn't just a little bit of homework involved?

I don't see a scam here. Looks like somebody's not as familiar with guitars as they should be to be selling this type of item. However, he does mention that it's been modified. He's just got the description of the neck pickup wrong.

My guess is that this was someone's player way back when, and when the neck went bad they put on what was available.

Just because someone's selling an old guitar that's been modified doesn't automatically make it a scam.

I quite agree w/ the above....Scam is a very Strong word for what is perhaps just an Early Modified Guitar...we used to do that kinda stuff back in the Jurassic Period.......

If this was originally an Esquire, wonder why it has a neck pickup rout under the P90 rout? Maybe in '59 they did both routs whether it was an Esquire or a Tele?

Fender still routed for the neck pickup. Esquires wont have screw holes in the ends on the pickup route though, and I'm not seeing any holes.... (just the 2 in the middle of the cavity, which obviously aren't from a tele pickup)

I think scam is kinda appropriate.. Strange how all the dodgiest eBay listings are made by a second party, who inevitabley knows just enough about guitars to make an almost convincing listing, pointing out all the good parts of the story.. yet still leave HUGE big holes in their story about anything that will lower the value of the guitar.

If someone knew their guitar was worth 12 000, don't you think they'd at least give it to someone who could write a proper listing to hopefully get a good sale.. Just because the owner isn't computer savvy, doesn't mean he can't scribble down the correct details and story of his guitar is he expects to get that much money for it..
