MIJ Tele Custom's from the mid 80's to 90's
Does anyone know what kind of pickups were in these guitars?
Were they a Japan interpretation of the classic 60's pickup or Texas Specials?

I have an 1985 MIJ Tele Custom and the stock pups are definitely not Texas Specials. They may be US Vintage pups; whatever they are, they sound very good! I believe some of the newer CIJ Telecasters have the Texas Specials installed.

The one I had was either 86 or 89.. had the usual crappy japanese pickups, they sounded horrible, certainly not texas specials (Though they don't sound much better to me anyway, just my opinion)
I think they started using the texas specials when/after they swapped to CIJ instead of MIJ.. |

most of my MIJ Fenders are mid/late 1980's vintage and had fairly shrill
stock pickups. I swapped out a couple with Texas Specials but I'm about ready to try something new in a couple of my Teles.
