Need Help pricing a guitar, Please

I have the opportunity to purchase a 84 MIJ 52 RI. I need to know what a fair market price would be for this guitar. It still has the case and ashtray. Neck has a little play wear other than that it is in great shape.
This guy is a friend and I don't want to undercut him so please give some ideas of a "fair" price. Thanx.

If you're talkin' about "material, re-sellable worth", I wouldn't pay more than five or six hundred for it. If your talking about vibe-value, well, that totally depends on what you want in a guitar. And of course, a little playin' wear never hurt anything, it gives it character and makes it play better, in my opinion. It ain't broke, it's broke-in!

Mark-I called the guy and the serial number is: A000341

Is there any way to tell me how I can identify whether it is one or the other?
He got the guitar on a trade with a different axe and he is trying to be honest about the whole thing.

According to the lists of serial numbers I found A is 85-86.

They all have A as the serial number. So you really cant go by that but that is a really low serial #.

The Vintage style ones look like a 50's Fender.

Thaus just got an early 80's 62 MIJ for $530 on Ebay.

Id have him pull the neck and see what the date is and have a look at the switch and pots.

$500-750 is the range I see the ones with all vintage specs sell for.

Offer him $500 you can always sell it for that if you dont like it for some strange reason. The early MIJ's are usually really good great necks!

There...did that push ya on over the edge?

Sounds like your mind is really already made up - I say go for it if the funds are there and you like it. Go get it and post pictures!
