What do you do when the plastic starts bubbling and coming off the pickguard? Do you remove the whole thing? And how?

Are you talking about the factory transit protective coating ? If so, peel it off...it's not meant to be there.

I always hated removing that stuff. Remove and replace each screw (or every couple of screws) around where you're peeling the plastic off. That way you don't get little plastic ends sticking out from under your screws.

Forgot to say....that isn't a stupid question at all.
Now this is a stupid question....I just sold an electro accoustic on ebay, the guy gets it...phones me up and said....I'm not joking here...he said.."Great guitar, fantastic condition..only I can't get the volume control to work..in fact the tone controls make no difference either"
I asked him what kind of amp he is using, he replied.......amp ? what amp ?

I could hardly talk to him for laughing.

in close to 20 years as an educator, there is NO such thing as a stupid question. However, some of the people you deal with, now that's another story (see Scotland's post above). Scot, you reet made me day wit that one, mon!

Of course there's such a thing as a stupid question! When I was in school, I was the grand master at bringing classes to a screeching halt with stupid questions. They made the mistake of putting my best friend and I together in our 8th grade "personal development" class. When that kid got giggling, he couldn't stop, and when he got really laughing he'd turn bright red and start hyperventilating.

At least once a week the teacher would send me out into the hall while she tried to decide if Zach needed to go to the nurse. :D
As for the pickguard protective plastic: I just pull slowly and let the plastic stretch around the screws, almost always comes out clean. If it does start to tear (which you'll notice because you're paying attention and watching closely, right?), you can simply back the screw out a couple of turns. No need to remove it completely.

Be extra careful of the pickup mounting screws, though. Those are the only ones that pinch the plastic against the pickguard, and can be tricky.

Techinically, Eryque is correct. However, one must distinguish between the intentional and the unintentional stupid question. For example, the teacher finishes explaining the theme of the novel, and asks if there are any questions. The "klass klown" raises his/her hand and responds, "Yeah, can I go to the bathroom?" Laughter ensues. What I should have made clear is that oftentimes, we can't be simple (vs. simplistic) enough when it comes to questions that may seem obvious to us. I think I spent 3 months wondering what GAS was before I posted the question. Thanks to Eryque for the illustration by way of anecdote. Uh, can I go to the bathroom now? ;-)
