Need Something to do while the OSBcasters dry

Ya I know,another one,but got to be productive on my days off
This is another build for one of the kids.Almost seems a crime to use this wood for a kid that doesn't know how to play(yet)
He has guaranteed me he will look after it when it is completed and the best part,I will get to use it when I want

Because both of his brothers have one of my builds
The youngest claimed the Original Fircaster

The oldest one has a build in progress.It is actually finished but it is the guitar I was going to use the MM Birdseye neck on

As you can see they are both Thinline style.
He liked the idea of the lighter thinline but wanted it to be different
Here is the wood we are using for the top

The body will be made from the leftover mystery wood that I bought a while back.Suppose to be alder but I don't so

Well I got everything glued up and routed out and we had a little meeting

Seems he wants a blue guitar,and to make it different than the others,we have decided on double f-holes.Not sure if I am going to rear route it or try to wire it up through the f-holes.Anyway,I got to work and did the f-holes.This laser cut template makes it nice to do f-holes.It is the full size of the body,with the same holes as my router template.I just screwed it on,did the top f-hole,took it off,turned it over and routed the bottom one.Man this is much better than a scroll saw and files

Now we have to try to get this thing blue.
I had really good luck with dye on the red ash one I did so I mixed up some blue dye with alcohol and give it a try
Hmmmm,not the greatest

Looks kinda cool but not dark enough for the kid.
I did some surfing,reading,surfing,reading and give it another attempt.
I read on one of the sites(not sure which one because I was at so many) to put down some black and then sand it back to make the grain stand out.I also read than if I used water instead of alcohol it will soak in better before it dries.This time I also dampened the wood to raise the grain before I put any of my color on.I let it dry,sanded it and then put on the black,let it dry,sanded it back to where there was just a hint of black left.Then I hit it with the blue.I had this mixed a little stronger.
The results are much better and are more like what we are looking for

Here is a test piece I did on a scrap using black first on the left and straight blue on the right.Quite a difference

I have been talking myself out of trying to bind a f-hole for quite a while.This is going to have a single white binding on the top so I'm a thinkin white binding in the f-holes would look pretty good.Might experiment with 0.060 stuff to see if I can get it bent to fit nice but if not I will weaken and just use some 0.020 or 0.040 white.I tried to find some blue binding but nobody seems to make it.

Didn't get a lot done on this today.Yardwork took over since it was nice here.I did manage to sneak in the shop for a while and get the chambers cut.

I remember now why you take most of the material out with the drill press.I just used the router on this one,there is sawdust everywhere

Hit the test piece with a shot of water base lacquer after I shot the Osbcasters
Message to self "don't use the orbital to knock down the fuzzies on the real piece"

I have been eyeing up some walnut in the shed myself .. while I wait for parts. I think they call it withdrawl

Amazing work, as always, Marty! Thanks for your continued posts.

I like the thin binding best - gives it more of an accent, rather than taking over the graceful curves.

I like the look of the thicker F hole binding. Will it make the wide part of the F hole in the middle too small to drop a pot in?

You could always wire it through the jack hole.

It's gonna look great.

Those F holes turned out great, Marty!

Like Mark, I prefer the thinnest of the 3 bindings on the F holes.

I decided to go play with my f-holes tonight

I did the nightly spraying of the OSB girls and went to work on the other one

This top is almost 3/8" thick.I think it looks to thick through the f-holes
so I took the router and thinned it up around the holes

I think it just looks better,and when the binding is on it wont look so thick

I softened the routed part on the back with the sander and knocked off the fuzz on the inside of the f-holes
I think we are ready

Oh my this is fun.This binding I got from StewMac.It seems to be more brittle than the other stuff I have been using.You have to be real careful when you make the tight bend in the f-hole or it will kink.I went and stole mama's hair dryer to warm it up a bit.I decided just to do the tight part of the hole tonight and let it cure overnight.I tried to carry on but was scared I was going to pull the binding away from the wood if I tried to do it all at once.

I wasn't real sure if I should dye it first or bind it first.I think I will have better luck binding and trimming a bit first.Then I can clean up the glue seepage and then dye it.I am scared if I dye it first,I might end up sanding or scraping through the dye cleaning up the glue.Not sure but too late now

Lol, maybe when you come back from dinner that binding will have mysteriously turned itself on and binded the entire top and f holes.

Well not sure if it is my CA glue or what.Had a terrible time trying to get the binding to stick in the f-holes.As I mentioned before,this binding seems real brittle too,hmm.I thought I had it and went to scrape the binding flush and it just popped off the wood.Oh well.Decided to pull it all out.I will attempt this again on a later build.I don't want to chance screwing up this nice piece of wood.I do really think it'd my glue.It is getting old.
Well pulled all the binding out of the f-holes and sanded them,and got the top clamped on.I will pull off later today,roundover the back,sand the sides and maybe do the binding channel on the top.Got some other issues to work on today,like a leaky roof.Mind you,when it stopped raining,it stopped leaking

Marty-

If you haven't tried it yet, you should- I think the Weld-On 16 works waaaay better than CA for binding. It actually "melts into the binding, and it won't let go.

Then there's the heat thing for shaping the binding. I do this, and it only takes about 10 strategically placed pieces of masking tape to hold the binding while the glue sets. I glue up a section at a time, and some areas only require you to hold it with your fingers for a couple minutes, then move on.

Way less messy and less messy at scraping time too. I used this method (Weld-On) first, tried one with CA, and now back to Weld-On. For me at least it's a far easier way to glue binding.
