I'm building a tele, so I registered here.

Hey,

here a new forummember from the Netherlands. After building a few strats and a hollowbody PRS it's time to build a tele (everyone should own at least one, so it better be a good one).

It wil be an Esquire with a high output humbucker hidden under the pickguard, ash one-piece body, LPB nitro finish, binding on the front-side, lightly reliced and a big chuncky neck.

Neckblank:

Body blank:

My last projects:

One piece ash body, big fat maple neck, nitro finish, GFS pups, lefty Diego Deluxe tremelo, Sperzel locking tuners.

Two piece alder body, maple neck, ebony fretboard, GFS pickups, lefty tremelo, vintage tuners:

Thanx Woodman en Ronkirn.

Today I did some rough routing, need to use some filler in a few spot, but thats no problem because I want a white primer an then LPB.

The humbucker will be mounted in a mountingring that will be held in place by the pickguard. That wil make trussrod adjustments easy (small channel between neckpocket en humbuckerrouting).

Hey g.g. welcome.

I see you have built a strat and I'm thinking about contouring one of my Tele's. Any advice on how to get the right angle and keep it smooth.

Oh and no fancy shop here. Mostly hand tools.

Thanks!

Very interesting work! Please share every step and aspect of your latest project build with us. There are some incredibly great inventive guys around here, and also many class-a players who can add some insight on what they would like to see. The info shared around here is pure gold!

I will....

I taped my fingers so I won't get superglued to the body and glued the cream binding to the body. It's a pretty simple job to do, as long as you use enough tape to keep the binding in place. In an hour I will fill some gaps with superglue (if there are any)

The dark colour on the body is a stained porefiller (I was afraid the ash would soak up all the superglue)

My set-up for sanding the sides of the body:

I've put a white primer on the body and spraypainted it with a rattlecan in the colour blue, as close as I could find to Lake Placid Blue

Nice project. I like the tape on the fingertips. Clear evidence you have been building with cyano-glue for a while now.

Question: That's a gorgeous looking piece of ash. How difficult is it to find quality wood; is it just a question of being in a major port city?

Welcome,

Welcome,
It's an hour drive from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, by the harbour, there is a woodstore, which sells a lot, like ash, maple, alder, rosewood, padouk, ebony, wenge etc...

I bought a big piece of ash, big enough for 3 bodies. It cost me about €80 which is about $120. Not bad for 3 onepiece ash bodies.

Nice work. And your process looks orderly as well! Just out of curioisty, what pickups are you using, or do you vary them on each build?

I'll try a lot of them, but these days i like GFS. Best bang for your buck!!!

I'm not sure what to use on this telecaster/esquier. I want the pups to be pretty high output (especialy the neck humbucker since it will be mounted under the pickguard).

Here are some pictures of the final colourcoat (you can still see the grain). Next will be a few layers of clear tinted nitro.

The neck has got the trussrod and the fretboard, so shaping it is the next job to do.

Welcome, Welcome!

Looking great already! Did you make the fretboard yourself? Or get it cut already?

Hey, my Brother was stationed at the AFB for like 8 years there. Never got to visit there, but visited him in Denmark though.

Are you going to show us you making some fiddleback wooden shoes? ;)

Welcome!

Robt57, the fretboard is precut. I'm not going through all that hassle cutting a fretboard when i can buy it for about €12 ($18).

Today I sprayed the clear coats. Now I'll just have to wait a while, so I'll go on with the neck.

The are a few spots in the paint, but that doesn't bother me, since this one will be relic'ed lightly.

Looking great!! Did you get the Stew-Mac pre-cut fretboard? If so please
let me know how you like it.

No, I didn't buy this one at Stew Mac, but I use Stew Mac fretboards in the past (maple, rosewood and ebony). I think they are good quality.

What would be a good pickup combination? I want it to have a pretty good high output. What bridgepickup in combination with what neckpickup (humbucker, high output, it will be UNDER the pickguard)?

I'm a bit on a budget, so GFS would be a nice alternative.

I'm thinking to use this wiring:

Today I shaped the neck and put some filler on it. Next will be some more sanding grid 240, 400 and 600, some positiondots, frets and nitro.

And a preview of what it will become (without the neck pickup in the pickguard)
