Reliable Musicians
I have to categorically state that I must be one of *the* most reliable and enthusiastic musicians I know of. I seem to be always running into strife with people who just don't get it. For instance, a drummer turned up to a gig (around 20 years ago) with no kit. Recently I sacked an entire band because they were just plain idiots. Bass player from said band didnt want to buy his own amp and always relied on the kindness of stupid guitarists willing to stick him in their amp. I sware my jaw always hit the ground on that one. Many other cases to speak of but I'm sure you all have your own stories.
I on the other hand, am always arranging rehearsal venues, times, always there and set up at least 30 mins before time, designing flyers, organising communication (mailing lists etc).... the list goes on. Man, it's hard work before you even get to the stage of playing to an audience.

Reliable Musician = Oxymoron...
...at least in my own limited experience.
For example: in a current project that has been literally years in planning, the two "pro" musicians involved were consistently flakey in showing up and alternately brilliant and terrible when actually playing. OTOH, the "amateur" players (those with real day jobs) by and large showed up on time, prepared, and ready to get the job done. Maybe I just attract a certain class of person... %^)

In my experience, musicians often become musicians not because they love the music, but because they love the "rebel" lifestyle (selfish, substance abusing, terminally adolescent, etc.) they think goes with the job.

speaking from my producer's chair...
I simply don't CARE how good a performer is if he does not conduct himself in a pro way!
It is simply intolerable for a musician to be LATE during a recording session,be unprepared and unreliable. You know what? I have produced quite a few artists and used quite a few musicians the BEST ones (the ones with real talent and success) were NEVER late,NEVER foolish and ALWAYS prepared................... |

Story well known.....
Hah. People are different. You get along best with folks that have the same working ethics as your self. And the same goals. Beeing too ambitious can also be a burden. People who does not know hoe to be on time are a drag to work with. Actually impossible. I always pull out of projeckts as fast as +'ĻĻ if people does not know to show up for rehersals on time.... Thatīs the first thing you have to learn if you want to be a musician.
In my current band weīve played 200 gigs. Nobody missed a single one, everyones been on time, births, deaths, divorces, sickness you name it there is no excuse. Thatīs what it takes.... Baard
