An I Getting Runaround Fromlocal Shop?

I had them order me a 52 RI and 52 Hot Rod so that I could compare them side bu side before buying. I made it clear that I am very serious shopper and will be walking home with one of them. I also bought my Blues JR. amp there in Dec. so they know by the computer system that I put my money where my mouth is. I am getting the weird feeling though that something is not right becaseu it has now been 6 weeks and still no guitars??? Am i just being impatient or are did somebody else perhaps snatch up the guitars before they called me? How long does it really take for Fender to ship two guitars off to Canada?

my personal experience with fender is, it always takes about twice as long or more than they originally tell you it will take.

It can certainly take a couple months for a special order. Gibson has a big warehouse just outside Toronto, so their stuff is pretty quick, like a matter of days usually.

If your local shop ordered them with now money down, you will probably still have to wait several months before Fender gets both of those guitars to the local shop. Fender seems to be very slow with non "chain store" special orders.

If you didnt put any $$ down the store probably didnt order them.

If stores ordered guitars people said they were interested in and didnt put it on layaway or put some down to pay the balance when it comes in they would have alot of guitars that never sold that they used their $$ on.

It really all depends on how good you know the dealer. If your a regular customer and they know you on a first name basis and you have purchased many big ticket items they might take a chance and order a couple but if you just walked into the store and they dont really know you my guess is they didnt order it.

I think Mark is right.

Try to imagine. You order two cars from Chevrolet, but you're only intending to take delivery of one. Never met anybody that accomplished that so far.

If the dealer takes it upon himself to order both, which he might, he was probably overdue to restock his shop with MIA Fenders to begin with.

Assuming that you definitely want one of the two, buy a Hot Rod online from MF. I almost guarantee that you will fall in love with it - they are awesome guitars. If you don't, return it and order an AV52. The process will be a lot faster and more satisfying.

Thanks for the replies, I just got off the phone with them and the guitar shop told me that they are still on order. What is MF?? I dont want to buy online because I dont want to pay extra for customs etc.plu I would rather pick something up and play it before dropping that kind of money on it. Does anyone know any guitar stores in the greater Toronto area that has either one of these guitars in stock right now?

Ive waited as long as 10-12 weeks for new Fender guitars.

What your dealer should do is contact all the other Fender dealers in Canada and see if they can cross ship you one.

Also if you put 100-200$ down it might show up real quick.

Go to (or call) any Long & McQuade and they'll check their computer and tell you which stores have them in stock. They can ship between stores as well if they're not both at the same location. What part of Toronto are you in?

Steve's will have a wall of Strats, and a dozen Tele's at best.

I think I'm right in saying that if your store orders in 2 guitars from their Fender distributor, they'll have to pay for them. So if you're only going to buy ONE of them (and you haven't actually paid a deposit as yet to show real intent), they'll be stuck with the other.

Had you said that you wanted to try and American Standard vs a MIM Standard, I don't think they would have had a problem - whichever one you took, they would be sure to sell the other sooner or later. But as the AV52 and the Hot Rod are more expensive guitars, they are not going to go out of the store so quickly.

Whilst the AV52 is always going to be an extremely popular guitar, I'm not so sure that the Hot Rod will appeal to such a wide market, so your store is probably thinking that they may be "stuck" with that one if you go for the AV52.

In all honesty, if I was the owner of your local store, and you had asked me the same thing, I too would be very reluctant to pay out for two guitars knowing that one would just end up as a slow-moving stock item. I'm surprised they didn't say "OK - make up your mind which one you want, lay down your deposit, and it'll be here within 14 days"....

Whichever one you eventually get, I hope you absolutely LOVE it!....

Thanks Blues Hurler, I actually ordered them from Long and Mcquade. I understand about what you all are saying about a store being reluctant to order in two "higher" end guitars with no money down. What I don't get is why didnt they just ask me for a deposit in the first place?? I would have happily laid down a couple hundred bucks if that would have sped things up. Why lie to m all this time? (if that is the case). I will have to try Steve's music (not sure where they are exactly). I never Imagined spending $1500 would be so difficult.

Have you checked Steve's Music on Queen St? They claim to be one of the largest Fender dealers in Canada. Seems like they'd at least have one of the two in stock.

If Steve's in TO is like the one in Mtl, they have a bazillion strats and 3 MIM teles, an Avril tele and one MIA. No love for the tele, man.

I know where to try a 52RI, a Nocaster and a CS tele at competitive prices in stock. Sometimes this town kiss Toronto's asz (not just in hockey).
I know if I proposed this to my preferred Fender/CS shop they'd be on the wall a couple of days later (if not backorder).

But they like my money, oh yes they do...

I agree with the consensus that they didn't order them:

And if they did, they wouldn't know who you were, they would hang it on the wall, and then tell you it was sold as soon as it came in and you're out of luck.

That amp purchase you made means nothing to them. These are retailers, you know?

And in this economy, there's no way there aren't plenty of these models laying around ready to be bought. It has to do with your store's commitment to actually buy them.

I'm not sure about your specific situation, but Fender seems really slow in shipping guitars at the moment. I've been waiting for at least 4 calls from 4 different Fender dealers in my area. I am waiting for them to receive the 2008 Amer. Standard Teles. they ordered in January (at the NAMM show). These are guitars they ordered for inventory. So far no calls. Based on what I see available from the online sources, the specific colors I am waiting for, have yet to be shipped. Sweetwater doesn't appear to have the 52 RI or the Hot Rod in stock. Perhaps these are still in the queue to be made and shipped.

Good luck...

I've had good experiences with L&M. They're a big chain and won't worry about having a couple extra Tele's around. I've had them call 3 months after I've been in the store to tell me something's come in that I wanted to look at. Steve's does not have a lot of Tele's, I was just there last week. If you already ordered from L&M, just call your guy there and ask him if they need a deposit to ensure you get first pick. They're not gonna give you the runaround. In fact, they have a 30 day return policy, so if you buy one of them and don't like it after you play it at home for a couple weeks, you take it back for a full refund, no questions asked. They move a lotta gear. I'm surprised they couldn't find at least one of those somewhere in their chain.

Thanks Blues Hurler, I have always also had good experiences with L&M, I will call back and ask if they would like a deposit to ensure I do get first pick. I am also surprised that they could nto find one at any of their other locations but I guess its a relly hot item right now?? I never thought waiting for a new guitar was gonna be this tough. Hey maybe there is song here waiting to be written, "I got the waiting for my new tele blues"?

I understand that some people don't like the idea of buying guitars online, but I have had great luck (knock on wood). I have probably purchased over forty guitars either from online dealers or from ebay, some very expensive Custom Shop models, and I have only sent one back. One of the others was badly in need of a setup, but played like a champ afterward. I was very happy with all of the others.

I suppose if I lived in a big city and had a lot of local music stores I may feel differently. Then again, I looked all over Las Vegas for some really good Teles and didn't find a ton of options.

Just something to think about.

Thanks Jellcaster, but I dont want to order my Tele online because I will get screwed by customs bringing it over the border and will have to pay the extra taxes etc. I can get the Tele for the same price as I see on the online guitar stores right fom my local guitar shop. Maybe like KSKS has suggested Fender is just in a real SLOW period for some reason???
