Favorite Tele Tone ?
Pehaps this has been done before, forgive me if it has...but a recent youtube post got me thinkin'. I'm curious as to some of your favorite Tele tones. Who's tone do you love the most & why? Who's tone influences the tones you try to acheive yourself? I personally am a big Billy Gibbons fan. I think his is a great case for the whole "tone is in your hands" argument. Who do you like?

Jim Messina, during the Loggins and Messina daze...
I have been listening to a lot of that these days. Though he doesn't make a whole lot of news, that boy has definitely put his stamp on a lot of music since the late '60's with Buffalo Springfield, Poco, L&M, and solo... His tele work and sound were fine...indeed. |

I got influenced by Luther Perkins, Don Rich, the second guitarist for George Jones, Waylon Jennings, and the guy that plays for Alan Jackson. They all have great tone.

All of those great Bakersfield sound players, Jeff Beck, Roy B., Kid Ramos (those Esquire sounds with Fabulous T'birds) and Redd. Honorable mention to Robbie Hoddinott (formerly of Kingfish).

i wish jimmy would play a tele again, but he is a very tasty guitarist on whatever guitar (mostly strat, now) he' playing. a very talented guy. easily my fav tele tone; and maybe my fav guitar tone of all time... imho. rand z tropicalsoul.net |

Wow! Half of the reason I asked is cause I knew that I wasn't gonna know any of the people you'd be talkin' about. I figure this is a good way to learn about some good musicians. I've also always loved Petty's rhythm tone. Nice dirty/clean texture to it.

I really like Brad Paisley´s tone and Bruce Springsteen´s live tone sounds also very good to me. For those slide sounds Rory Gallagher sounds awsome with his Tele and Keith Richards is also very much fun to listen to, especially live!

Welcome aboard, Trem! Also, if anyone wanted to post clips, I wouldn't be opposed to that either

My fave tele tones are more rhythm guitar orientated, but not in any order of preference.
Joe Strummer +1 on Syd Barrett (Lucifer Sam is some great rhythm playing) Manuel Galban. Fabulous reverb drenched Cuban stuff Hugh Cornwell. Tank, and most of the Black and White album Frank Black/Black Francis. Awesome Tele/Vox combo, a perfect foil to Joey Santiagos' Les Paul Robert Quine. His stuff w/Richard Hell Folks above have mentioned some great country stuff. These just prove that the Tele is the worlds most universal guitar, and can cross musical styles like no other. |

It's impossible for me not to include my three first and biggest Tele heroes:
Roy Buchanan (60's and 70's) Steve Cropper (Stax years) James Burton (most of the time) That doesn't mean I don't appreciate a lot of other great Tele tones, though. Allow me to pull forward a couple of our own fellow TDPRI'ers - some fantastic Tele tones here. First John Beland with Ricky Nelson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uURziqlBznI I love this instrumental by Terry Downs - some unbelievable bass twang here: http://www.terrydownsmusic.com/Archi...ricanGuest.mp3 |
