Is This Candy Apple Red or 'Metallic' Red??
Here's a sample pic of a tele i found on the 'Rothstein' guitars site, this is exactly the color i want on a strat i'm building.
Candy Apple Red/Metallic Red Tele Sample Pics Candy Apple Red/Metallic Red Tele Close-up Pic So is this candy apple red, or is that a metallic finish underneath. I can't I'm getting USACG to make the body and neck for me (i'm also gonna match the headstock with the body finish). I just want to make sure i know exactly what to tell Tommy when i order it so i can get the color and finish just right. If this is the color and finish i want, what should i tell him?? This is exactly the color and finish i want on my strat with a vintage tint maple neck, matching red headstock and parchment pickguard. Thanks Guys, ~Joel~ |

There is a notable difference between metallic and metal flake...the metallic/iridescent has small grain particles where metal flake has large flakes
Candy colors start with a metallic base then the candy color is applied prior to clear coating. The acrylic lacquer finish usually has a very deep appearance to it. Metal flake is applied in clear over a colored base coat. The large flakes have a rough texture requiring additional clear coats to level the finish. Back in the 70's metal flake in acrylic lacquer was the hot custom automotive finish.

Candy Apple Red was produced in the '60s by spraying a gold or silver undercoat, followed by a transparant red. You could do something similar using Dupli-Color Metalcast MC200 Red Anodized.
That Rothstein headstock has got to go into my clollection of bad headstock designs. ......

Here's a quick test I just did. Silver undercoat on the left. Gold undercoat on the right. Uniform Dupli-Color Metalcast Red applied to both. Quick coat of Deft Gloss. ............All done within 10 minutes ........ no compatibility problems.

My "candy apple red" Nashville looks like the pictures. That color name, FWIW, is according to the Fender specs on their website.
Somehow, my Nashville got a teensy little chip, and I can see that there is a layer of gold under the red. Reference picture:

Andy’s Tele is CAR, and Andy Rothstein is a heck of a good guy…
CAR was originally produced by putting down a finish of silver metallic, this was the standard until around ’66 when they started doing it over Shoreline gold. The Transparent red is simply Lacquer with red aniline dye, or other Lacquer compatible dye. When I do it I keep the red dye thin so it takes many coats to achieve the correct shade, this gives much better control of the tint. Ron Kirn

ASAT Bass
Thanks Y'all for the complements.
Found the ASAT at the Spartanburg SC Guitar Show, coupla years ago. If you think the Red 'Flake is happening, the neck on it isn't too bad either. Flame with birdseye. I couldn't throw the money at the dealer fast enough. Very affordable considering the upcharges this bass would retail new. Actually the selling price was inline for a used ASAT without the options.
