Got back out to the shop through the snow.It finally stopped, for now
Went after this with some 180 and then 220 paper.Got it as smooth as I could

Threw a paint stick on it and got ready to hit it with some sealer.Hung up the other one too in case I had some left over in the gun.

We are going to skip the grain filler on this one. This sealer is suppose to be high solids so we will see just how it works.I thinned it a bit for this first coat so it will soak in good.Hey this water base stuff is nice to spray,no stink
This is what I am using

EmTech®8800

This thing soaked it up pretty good. This stuff sprays pretty nice.First time I tried spraying it.I did one coat and then waited a couple minutes and give it another.

The edges are going to be the tough part

I give the other one a shot to empty the gun. They are resting peacefully for the night

Well can't work on one without the other.Don't want to have to clean the gun twice either

Well same thing,220 grit with the sanding block.Remember,no filler in this one.Actually this stuff fills almost as good as filler and it is much easier to sand

I was surprised how well it sealed the edges. They were a little rough before I sanded but are actually very smooth now.

Definitely still much work to do but first impressions of this stuff is pretty good.Hit it with another coat too.We will see how dry it is later before I go to bed.Would be nice to give it a sanding and another coat tonight

Marty, the water based seems to be doin' a fine job. i'd have guessed otherwise considering the objet du art being painted. Looks like it's really doing a great job of the fill. is it getting heavy?
I can hardly wait for this to complete.

Snow, eh?

It was in the 70s (°F) here today.

I still get a kick out of the "grain" on the sides of those things. Reminds me of chipped beef for some reason.

Whatever that means!

Went out and checked and we were good to go.Did a block sand and hit it with another coat.

There were a couple pretty deep spots so I did a kind of drop fill to them.Guess we will see how it looks tomorrow.
A wise man said it best.I am making this up as I go

I can hardly believe how slick it's finally getting. I think I'll have to try the water based. Looking good, Marty!

Marty, is the body as rough to the touch as it looks? Or were you able to smooth it down some? Looks great, btw.

Oh...& I had a thought. How about a carpet pickguard? Something with a very short nap to it obviously. & something with a really funky pattern like a casino or hotel type deal. Just a thought...

I think the home centers and lumber yards should start grading OSB with AA, AAA, and AAAA ratings.

50% FSC wood, that's one LEED point. Use some recycled wire, neck, 10% total content for 2 more points. Maybe go for a 20% regional materials credit for another 2pts, Low VOC paint, and a few other things you could submit it to the Green Building Council for a LEED certified Telecaster.

Wow, I didn't know they made flamey OSB!

Nice job. Incredibly good idea with the ash center block. The only problem I can see is the weight, esp. with all the sealer to fill those fibers.

I'm trying to think of a way to lighten the load... I suppose you could have built in some cavities but too late now... and it might have been difficult given the nature of the materials... maybe attach a few helium balloons to the headstock and end pin when you're playing it? Just in case you failed to get the attention of everyone in the room...

IF you are following along with the other OSB thread, you know I am beginning to get impressed with this water base lacquer.
After I finished my 3rd coat with it on this one,I decided to try dome drop filling on some of the deeper spots. They say this has 100% burn in,should work right?
Well let me tell you, even with the random orbital there was some work to get this stuff sanded down.I can't believe how hard this stuff gets.I was able to hit this thing with the orbital 2 hrs after I drop filled. Some of these spots were pretty deep and they were totally dry. Here is a pic after using the orbital and before the last coat

Needless to say I sprayed it again and then drop filled some more spots now I know it will work.Tomorrow I think I will drop fill some spots on the other one

Never wanted to do that before
make your hardware out of some simson straps. some of them might be thick enough......

Marty, Great build. I am watching both OSB builds closely. The "instrument" in this pic is finished with Envirolite and sparkles. I made it a couple summers ago as a joke since toilet humor goes over so big in bars. The finish isn't smooth at all - more like 40 grit sandpaper - but it sure sparkles under the lights. This was dubbed the "Telecrapper" .. haven't tried to sand the finish but after a couple days it gets real hard..
