Bloodwood

Whilst waiting for things to dry and parts to arrive, and being short on money for lumber, I spied 2 - SYP 2x4's that have sat drying in my hot garage for about 5 years. Upon further examination, they proved to be very clear with the few knots being less than 1/4". Well, I says, If it is good enough for the big guys, it's good enough for me, sooooo...after some skil saw and jointer work, I have a very nice 16-1/4" x 13-3/8" x 1-1/2" blank gluing up. No grain to speak of but I plan to put a 1/4" cap of some sort on it for 'pretty'. I've got some un-flamed but sort of pretty koa already resawn and some flamed maple that I could split, but I was thinking of using bloodwood - does anyone have any experience with this stuff for anything but necks? It doesn't have fancy grain but it might be real sharp with gold hardware, assuming the color doesn't fade. I think it's oily enough to not need a finish, but maybe a couple coats of wipe on poly might shine it up. What do ya'll think?

Bloodwood does oxidize and turn brown so dont expect it to stay that red color,,, especialy if you use and oil on it. Sounds like a great project!

Well, if it's gonna fade, maybe I'll go with something else. This might be the time for a "paisley-caster", or, that guy with the swirly paint on the stomp boxes looked sort of interesting. Since I've only got about $2 and some glue in this thing, I'd say the sky's the limit. Any suggestions?

OK - here's the results, so far. After running through the drum sander, I got a finished thickness of 1-3/8. Still can't decide on a top-maybe just a pine top and then some paisley or hawaiian material clear coated or koa or maple or........

Couldn't find any paisley cloth that really knocked me out but some of the Hawaiian stuff is pretty neat - I've about decided on this one. What do ya'll think? I guess you could call it 'Aloha-caster'.
