It reminds me of an acoustic guitar Taylor made in the early 90's out of an oak pallet from their loading dock. It had nail heads in the top and everything.

It was not for production, they were just showing off. I had a play of it at a NAMM show. It sounded great. It just goes to show -it's not what you got, but what you do with it. Absolutely amazing.

Give this a quick sanding before I carry on with more clear

It's obvious that the top on this is never going to have a glass smooth finish.Mind you,the divots give it a nice relic look

I wanted to contribute as well throw my two cents into this monster post.

I see a traditional (aged) tone plate but with cigarette liter buttons from a ford or chevy...

I don't know, might not work a pick n pull might have them.

o wait yer in the rural area, oh my bad.

never mind ....

keep going.

I always wanted to have a Zebrawood body and a Birdseye neck Guitar (Tele)
wonder what it would sound like, weight wise too.

i think the front of the guitar looks unique... i'd have to see it fully assembled. the back, on the other hand, is gorgeous. I don't think I've ever seen vertical stripes like that on a sunburst. Anyway, good work

Looks like a horse race between imagination and skill. Nice work, and thanks for sharing.

I vote for the door from a fuse box/ breaker box for the pick guard.
Maybe pegboard.
Asphalt shingle?

hey marty, will the old yellow and black Alberta license plates work as a pick guard? maybe it could fit kinda like a thinline guard? maybe something like this one. http://www.yanktanks.co.uk/plates/albertajhk871.jpg

Hmmmmm
I can start to see why OSB is not used for building guitars
We seem to have run into a problem
I'm not sure if it is all the wet weather we have been having or what. This thing was nice and flat to start with.Maybe it has been all the re-finishing this poor thing has went through, not sure.
We seem to have developed a cup in the body.

Like I said I am unsure what made it do this..I am sure I could put a neck on it and it would be playable. The center seems flat still, just the wings have seemed to "Fly south"
Kind of a let down.Maybe I should park my truck on it for a couple days
I am still going to finish it.Even if it just gets used as conversation piece. The neck pocket is still nice and flat.

Ironically, the other one that is all OSB,except for the ash strip is still as flat as a pancake.Mind you it was sealed with lots of lacquer before the wet weather hit

Just be happy it isn't a concave movement. Is the OSB actually thicker in the middle now? Are you sure the back did not warp and take the OSB with it? To me this is more likely, the back piece shrinking and cupping and the OSB just followed...

Did you throw the straight edge across the back ??

I can just see it now...

Q: "How is the action on that Tele?"
A: "Depends on humidity..."

Q: why do you only play slide when it's raining ??
A: ppfffftt....

Have you considered a dual micro tilt setup??

The whole thing has cupped.I can't see the back moving as it is 75+ years old, but, maybe there was enough moisture in the OSB it took some on.Hard to say.I bit disappointing after all the work I have put into this thing.Like I said,I'm sure it can still be used, just not flat any more.

The back surface shrunk and the distance shortened. Which is what I suspected. So you think it is possible the OSB sponged dampness and the real wood absorbed it and swelled in the middle, or that the outer surface of the back shrunk ??

It's really hard to say but probably. The back now has a concave.
Like I said, the one that is made entirely of OSB is still nice and flat

Well, being in waterproofing I can tell you EVERYthing is a sponge, just to what degree is the question

Either the back has shortened from shrinkage, or the front lengthened from expansion OR BOTH!

Did you have it sitting face down somewhere by chance [like on something that holds moisture more than you considered]

I find myself wondering if your top sponge did not absorb moisture into the routes. Did you seal the routes ??

Sit it on the concrete back side down, and when the cup reverses seal the routes!!! maybe she will stay.

Or sit it out in the sun OSB side up and see if the cup flattens. Then seal every possible face on the front!!!

A similar thing happened to me once on a D-18 style acoustic I put together and finished with a water-based lacquer.

I don't understand it completely, but it seems reasonable to me that when we put a water-based finish on a guitar, at least some of the water will be absorbed by the wood.

Sometimes we even aggravate the problem by putting lots of coats on real fast...figuring that if the surface is dry, everything must be dry.

But like I said, I don't have a complete handle on what is going on.
