Teles with B3s...

Man I love the sound of a B3 and a Tele. A pure, natural combination. What are your favorite groups using these classic instruments? Old school or modern, I have no preference - just great tone.

My band. Our new record which is about to be mixed is laden with beautiful vintage B3 tones and my tele and esquire did 75% of the guitar parts.

First one that comes to mind that has B3 and tele central to the whole album is Joey Defrancesco & Danny Gatton - Relentless.

Albert Collins (my personal fave) always had a B3 in the mix somewhere. Cool thing is that Albert started off as an organ player in the line of Jack McDuff/Jimmy McGriff, and started playing guitar when his B3 got stolen from his truck!

It's my great-grandmother's A-100, which is a B-3 with a fancy cabinet.

Tele and B-3

My favorite is Booker T. and the MG's. - Steve Cropper on the tele.

Well... less fancy cabinet ...with internal speakers and reverb.... that fit's though doors easier.... and are cheaper.... and are kind of like an under the bed Telecaster find.. i.e. less abusued

+ reverb and build in speakers. the organ player in my dad's band hauls one around. It has the speakers taken out.

We had a A 100 but sold it a year ago, thinking about getting a new one as soon I we can find space to put it. All we have now is an L122 with 147 leslie my dad bought that one himself for his 18th birthday.

Hammond organs (tonewheels) are awesome.

Yeah sorry for the smartass reply. But at his age and with 10000 posts on a music forum, I was a bit surprised!!

Tell us more about those two huge, ancient Leslie cabinets? Are those pre-war?

This is a great thread.
I love some of the stuff Roy Buchanan did in his Polydor years.
I've been fooling around with a clonewheel on some of my Tele tunes. It's a nice combination.

I beat Jwells393 to the punch.

Those are a pair of "Tallboy" or 31H leslies. They were the first generation of Leslies created. The are fast spin or stop. The later ones ( 122, 147,etc) are slow or fast. They are after the war and actually were made up until the 60's.

Now there are two in the picture. The Leslie on the right dates 1949. The Leslie on the left is one I built out of solid bookmatched walnut. I hand carved all the louvers with a chisel. Silly I know but where I live these things are rare. Sadly it is failed project in some ways. The design of the cabinet does not allow for the expansion and contraction of solid wood. They were built out of lumber core plywood that is more stable.

I finished the top section and had to let it sit for a year while I did a major house renovation. When I did complete the project and brought it in the house the wood had started to shrink and eventually split. The plan is to rebuild the top out of MDF then veneer it.... someday.

A close up of the top before

Though it split it still sounds amazing. These cabinets have a large chamber for the bass speaker and are famous for the thundering bass sound. They both have a 15" Jensen Field coil speaker in them. Japan loves those speakers and will pay $450 just for the speaker. Needless to say they rattle the windows. I am in heaven.

Yep, Roy's anthology has some sweet overdriven B3 all over it. Best Booker T that needs to be released on DVD is from the Concert For The Rock'N Roll Hall Of Fame. They played with everyone that night! I taped it on VHS, but ran out of tape in the middle of the Allman's and it's starting to deteriate from overplay. HBO needs to release that one...

What else ya digging?

FWIW, Booker T and the MGs used a Hammond M-3 for Green Onions.

And here I was thinking: "How the heck would a Bigsby B3 fit on a Tele?"

I have a Hammond B3 and an 31H Leslie finished in factory-matching "lime oak" that I store for our annual reunion jams. I gutted the 31H (all but the horn and driver) and installed the poweramp and the fast/slow horn rotor motor out of a 147 - and a new 16-ohm 15" Jensen. Boy, does THAT combo sound great...

The 31H is actually sitting on a shelf in this pic, it's not quite THAT tall - but, it IS a Tallboy!

You cut the Tallboy? A factory Limed Tallboy ?? Send me pictures The pic of my band shows a 760 but we have gone to a 142. Won't mean anything to these boys but you might have heard of him. That's Captain Foldback on the M3 in the band pic.

Heavens to mergatroid! I wouldn't CUT a 31H... It's still FULL SIZED. No mods to the cabinet, except a small cutout in the bottom of the "horn enclosure" to accomodate the larger rotor-motor package.

I just tossed the original amp, the field-coil speaker, and the horn rotor motor, and replaced them with 147 parts I eBayed. The original amp was trashed when I got the 31H, and it was only twenty (or was it thirty?) watts anyway, if I had taken the time (and $$$) to have it rebuilt.

Here's another pic of "the rig," with the 31H sitting on the ground:
