New SX Tele=Ridiculous! (Good Ridiculous, not Bad)
I ordered one of the recently listed Black SX STL-50 teles from Rondomusic a couple of days ago, and it was waiting for me when I got home today (pics will be up soon).
All I can say is that I am VERY impressed. The fretwork is fantastic, no sharp edges or high frets on a very nice chunky maple neck. Other posters have alluded to needing to replace the tuners, but these seem ok. I think I am going to let them stay for a while. The pots seem decent and it sounds great both plugged in and unplugged. This was $123 shipped, and this guitar is more than worth that. Also, as other posters have mentioned the neck rout is HB sized. When I asked Rondo directly, they said it was an sc rout, but apparently not. |

That looks great. I've really been tempted to buy one of those but I'm trying to stop my guitar buying addiction. Haven't bought one in over a year.
I read these threads about guys buying the Saga and Grizzly kits. I think a better option is to buy an SX Tele style ........ take it apart and put it back together. You'd probably end up with a better guitar at a cheaper price.

How does the new teleclone get along with the ampeg? What model is that, btw. Good score on the Rondo. How chunky is the neck? Could you take time to measure thickness at the nut and 12th fret, if ya have time?
Thanks

Glad you got a good one. I had a BAD ridiculous SX Tele. The bridge was too close to the nut that it would not intonate. I couldn't get the saddles back far enough. I tried to move the bridge back but its a lot harder to plug and drill 6 good holes when the body is finished. hard to line up on the drill press, and finish cracking. I sold the neck on ebay, and the body is a hunk o junk in my closet.

Congrats Recluse!! Your experience matches mine for the 2 SX's I bought this year. Both are now Esquire clones & real players but were very good well beyond their meager price right out of the box. I haven't taken the time to measure my necks but would be interested if you do. Both of mine are noticeably chunkier than my AV 52. I've been hoping the SX would be available in black, but not quite this soon LOL !! Looks great with that dark amber neck. BTW, headstock reshape is pretty easy if you should ever be so inclined. Cool Ampeg, too........

I got an SX Strat and it was so-so. I had some fret issues, but otherwise it was promising. The wood was really resonant and good sounding in mine. I think it's hit and miss with SX guitars. The quality control is very up and down but I have heard from quite a few who have been lucky and prefer theirs to a MIM.

On the floor left to right: Dr. Boogey, It's a Mesa DR circuit using Jfet transistors instead of tubes. Nails the Mesa sound really well. BYOC Envelope filter is in the middle. The last one is an Omnidrive. It's a circuit developed by John Hollis. It can approximate a bunch of well-known pedals (Treble Boost, Clean Boost, TS, Big Muff, Dist+, Ampeg Scrambler, Fender Blender, etc.) It doesn't sound exactly like any of them, but it comes pretty close in a lot of cases. It's a nice tool for trying out a bunch of different sounds to see what you like. It's also nice for stacking. I don;t need two TS's I just need one, and then can play with the omnidrive. I've gone DIY crazy. The only commercial pedals I have now are a Boss Tuner and NS-2 (the HM-2 is a friend's that needed some repair). |

I have one of these as well. They are pretty nice. I would say the quality on these is usually very good. I intended to mod mine, but kept running into issues like the rout size for the pups and things. I have added new tuners, string trees, and a coil tap. The only thing I may change on it in the future is graphite saddles and possibly some GFS mean 90 pups.

I have two SX teles (see my avatar) and also an SX lap steel. The guys over on the Steel Guitar forum love the lap steels. I call my teles Dagwood 'n Blondie. I had the same problem with Dagwood, the black-on-black tele that Nashter had with his. But, I went to the local hobby shop and got some shorter black steel screws, cut the springs in half and adjusted almost as tight as they would go. Intonation is almost right on now. Mine is 1-5/8" at nut and 2" at 12th fret.

I'm not sure how the Xaviere will do with licensed parts. I seem to recall someone on the HC forums putting their MIM neck on a Xaviere, and it fit, and the screw holes lined up, but there was a significant gap in the neck pocket.

It's one of these:
http://www.rondomusic.com/wf150ta.html It's a stunning looking guitar for hardly any coin. Just that body alone is worth more than they're asking for that guitar.

Recluse, the black Tele looks great. Happy playing!
GetBent, my goodness that guitar is also gorgeous! I don't remember seeing that on Rondo's site before. As I've mentioned several times, I have an SX Strat (in brown sunburst and bar) and I think it is just fine for my level of playing. Ya know, Kurt could be changing the whole idea of GAS. It used to be a bit of a "sacrifice" or at least a little thought went into spending $500 or $1,000 on an instrument (as long as the mortage was paid and the kids were fed). But at around only $120 a guitar, one could start "collecting" these things like coffee mugs. Well, not quite, but you know what I mean. |

Douglas Guitars are Superior to SX Guitars
I have two Douglas teles, four Douglas ES-335 clones and I have modded a half dozen SX teles over the last few years. They are all extremely good values and good quality construction. Hardware and electronics can be improved but what would you expect for guitars this reasonable? These guitars easily outclass the GFS line. I would give a definate edge to the Douglas teles and ES-335 clones over the SX line. Just a bit better in all characteristics as reflected in the slightly higher price.

Yup - my wife's already made a similar comment........not as a suggestion but as something she see's happening - must have something to do with my comments like "I can't believe how nice these are for the money"....or...."wow - they have new colors......I really like that........mods for the next one are going to be........" Perceptive woman LOL !!! |

My son got one of the SX teles about a month ago.
It's powder blue with a black guard. Has a tinted maple neck. (I'll get pics later, at work right now) It played fine out of the box, but we had a setup done and it's even better now. Finish was fine and it seems to stay in tune fairly well, but we'll probably upgrade the tuners before long. Pickups are decent, so we aren't in a rush to change them out yet. Well, I'm not in a rush, my son want's to upgrade it with texas specials. Can't beat the guitar for the price. Dep |

I just got a SX STL50 3TS and I am very impressed. I replaced both pickups with Dimarzio Virtual T's then replaced the pots and switch with CTS brand. I also replaced the Saddles with some GraphTech's Tusq's and the tuners with a set of Pings. Not a lot invested and quite a nice sounding and playing guitar. These Guitars are a real deal.

So, Rhomco, how did you fit the neck shown in your pic? How about the SX Teles.....what's the neck pocket situation like on these, for
upgrading the neck using licensed parts? Anybody know on this?

I have a couple of SX's. Great value. If they came out with a Nashville Tele configuration I would be all over it.

http://www.rondomusic.com/product913.html and this one, a more teal-y, only slightly more tasteful that I also likes mucho http://www.rondomusic.com/stl50vgn.html my biggest concerns (other than a total lemon) is that it'll be heavy and not feel and sound good acoustically. once I get that reasonably light and fun to mess with foundation, the aesthetics and hardware are gravy. Tasty gravy! -capt pearl

The neck you see is

The SX neck pockets I have seen will all take a lic. fender neck just fine. The SX does not like a vintage bridge though. Rob

I fitted a vintage bridge to one of mine. Involved redrilling the string thru body holes - I started them about a half inch further back on the top of the body and angled forward to meet exist. ferrules on the back. Also had to fill 3 exist. bridge mounting holes that are exposed by the shorter vintage bridge. Not too bad if done carefully - will probably do it again on another. On the second SX I just drilled holes in the back "flange" of the stock bridge plate to accept 3 brass saddles as others have done. Nice easy 3 saddle solution. You can do a search to find more threads/info on these mods.

Rob ........... I've wondered about the SX bridges. Are they the long Asian bridges with the string through holes near the rear lip .......... in other words, the holes are too far from the neck to take a vintage style bridge?
