Has anyone tried the "upgraded" Americans?
My first post!
I have a Mex std that plays really well, but I'm looking to upgrade to a newer tele. What should I get? Has anyone tried the new "upgraded" '08 Americans yet? I play through a VOX AC30cc2...the tele sounds great through it...any help would be appreciated. |

Yup.
The neck is essentially unchanged, except for the gloss finish headstock and satin neck backside, which is not life changing. I like the plate and saddles better, but not enough better to buy the new one given the thin neck section. The polepiece stagger is different, it is a wash. The finish is better because thin finishes and really smooth uniform body wood always go hand in hand, I like that. Plus, the ash versions are decidedly lighter than ash Am Se Teles. ( I admit the comparo in a shop right now gives you an exaggerated result because leftover 06 and 07 ash Am Se Teles are almost always the heaviest ones, they tend to be the leftovers.) I have no idea how long Fender can continue to find more and more real light ash body blanks; maybe they'll backslide at some point.
All in all, based on neck thickness mostly, I'm on the sidelines, not buying.

I played a couple 08 American Deluxes I sure thought were sweet. At just over a grand, that would be the way I'd prolly go if I didn't have what I have. It would be either that, or the Baja. But I think the quality and finish/playability of the American Deluxes is much better than the Baja with their contoured and rather light bodies and satin finished necks. They can be shredded upon if neccesary.
I would love to have one of those in the arsenal but you see I had to choose people, I'm not made of money. SO I will have to be content with what I have. Thankfully, what I have is great with the GE Smith and a plain ol 60's Classic. 60's Classic is designated for slide. |

I tried out some of the Standard 08 models. They weren't too bad either, although not really comparable to the deluxe models. They didn't feel all that much different to the American Standard model I have from 2004 although they have some changes, mostly cosmetic, as well as a different bridge. |

I really liked the few 08' American Standards I've played lately. I liked one a lot, it was gone when I went back.
I'm pushing $500.00 on my "quit smoking, buy a new guitar" fund. I'm either going 52 RI, 08' American Standard, or a Thinskin. So far. Or Classic G&L, or.......... Actually, I'll probably end up with a Fender. When I find the one that speaks to me I'll pull the trigger, it's not a money thing at all, but little time to shop, and not many guitars around here. I have to travel to try em' out. Anyhow, I really do like the 08' Standards. Best of luck. Murph. |

Add me to the group. I'm still struggling to learn, so my assessment won't bear the weight of the guys here who can make them sing, but I'm pleased as heck with mine. Not ash, but a Candy Cola alder, not super lightweight, but still a bit under 8 pounds, and from what I can tell, sounds better than the 2006 ash that I had previously bought.
I like the feel of the new bridge saddles under my hand better, and the new bridge plate, I guess, has a lot to do with how it sounds. came from Sweetwater nicely set up and intonated, got it the day after it shipped, no complaints whatsoever. And the case wasn't as horrendously monolitic as I expected it to be from photos. In fact, I really like it. I'll post some pics when I get the chance. |

Yeah Cygnus I'd also take the AM Deluxe in Cherry Red or Black over the 52RI.
I had a 52RI back in 2002 and while it was a good guitar I was never really satisfied with it. It was a real "Tweener". I wanted it to be a great as my GE Smith is now, but it just wasn't a great specimen plus I hated the unuseable front pickup wiring and ended up putting a burstbucker pro in the neck pos. That improved it sonically, but really it was the finish I was never gonna really like longterm. To orange and thick, neck to thin/body too heavy. If it wasn't for the Smith or the right specimen of Nocaster, I'd be playing a Deluxe. Though I will admit that the day I bought the Smith, I hadnt yet tried the deluxe and was really on my way to buy a Baja when the Smith was unexpectedly there right next to it (they just got it in). It wasnt until early this week I tried both a Cherry and black deluxe that were fantastic playing and sounding axes. Love the contoured body and slick neck. Very pleasant to play, look at and hearv-vnot to mention versatile and reasonably priced. Last edited by chabby; April 12th, 2008 at 04:38 AM. Reason: spelling AM MA |

The most interesting thing about the various threads there have been about the pros and cons of the 08 AM Std, is that there are two kinds of people.
1. Detractors / Cynics (who don't own one) 2. Supporters / Believers (who DO own one) I think that speaks volumes, don't you? |

I'm not a fan of bent steel saddles so I wouldn't go for one...even if the rest of the guitar was OK. I rest my hand on the bridge a lot. I'd have to replace them with the old solid saddles, if possible, which I'd prefer not to have to do with a guitar at that price level. It should be more or less right straight away.
And I prefer vintage spec teles anyway. |

By the way palm muting with the 08 AM STD is MUCH better than with a 3 saddle bridge IMHO. |

I'm 51 and have owned at least a dozen Tele's over the years, from vintage to the American Deluxe to the MIM's. I currently own a 07 (new Tele Standard) and a 06 American Deluxe FMT HH.
The AD FMT HH is a perfectly designed guitar IMO. I'm not crazy about the p/u's, but the guitar is awesome. I especially like the Tele shaped body with Strat contours for comfort. Solid Alder Body, 1/8" Premium Figured Maple Top, Modern "C" Shape Maple Neck with Satin Polyurethane Finish, Deluxe Hard-tail bridge w/ Stainless Steel Saddles, Deluxe Staggered Cast-Sealed Tuners, Dot Abalone Inlays, Ebony Fretboard, 22 Medium Jumbo Frets, 2 DFH-1 Hum-bucking Pickups, S-1 Switching and they come with a nice brown deluxe case. Don't think for a minute you can't get the Tele bite out of this guitar because it's there in spades. The new Standards are Fender's best to date IMO. What's not to like? Polished FB's, stamped saddles (some like, some don't), better finish, etc. The P/U's are also very good, but once again, this is a matter of taste. They're not vintage, but are a nice cross and versatile. You can play anything short of shredding. I've been around long enough that I grew up playing what are now vintage guitars and I'll let the collectors have them. IMO guitars are better and more consistent now they they've ever been. Some people don't remember the days when you learned to play around the dead spots, put up with the guitar constantly going out of tune, etc. Yes they all sounded different (and there was a reason for that), but better? Matter of opinion. The new Standards are the best bang for the buck guitar on the planet IMHO. Many swear by the MIM models and they're good for money, but I think to claim they're as good or better than the AS is pushing things a bit and I'll just leave it at that. If you've got the coin American Deluxe; if you want the best bang for the buck go with the American Standards.

I like the bent steel better because they're smoothly rounded off, and my hand just seems to glide over them. I was always getting hung up on the squared, blocky saddles of the older American Series.

I don't understand. What else would you expect? The only thing that I would have a problem with is if someone criticized a guitar (Other than aesthetics) without having played it. I can be a detractor of something I don't own. I don't own it because I didn't like it.

Hi guys,
I'm new here and have been lurking for a while. Great place to be!! I'm a strat owner since the late 80s and recently discovered the teles. Based on some unformal reviews read here and other forums, I went and try the hwy 1 which I like, a few MIM and finally the AM Std. I thought the hwy 1 and the AMstd were pretty close on my wish list but I really did not like the finish. I then went to the AM std which I just love, in part because of the bridge simply because it is not that much different than what I'm used to (strats). The finish is great, the neck is awsome to my liking and it sounds like a tele. I like classic/vintage specs on most guitars but man... I won't be in the way of evolution. This just makes our instruments that much better, all the time and in a few years another tele will become the new thing that we will discuss. In 2028, the 08 AMstd will be a fine vintage intrument.. I have to agree that if I spent 1K on a guitar and did not like it... i wouldn't own it for very long (if bought on line). And I certainly wouldn't pay 1K for a guitar that I played in a store and didn't like.
All that being said... I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! I WANT ONE! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! NOW MOMMY... NOW!!! (action) Throws tantrum in the middle of the fender section of guitar center... on his back, kicking and screaming, banging right arm against grill of a 59 Bassman RI and left fist on foot of a shredder sitting on those squishy black benches, long wavy black hair covering his face, doing his best Slash imitation... and you notice that he is only 16 and plays better that you ever will... which only crescendos the tantrum |

I've played them in shops and like them. My favorite is the natural ash with maple neck. I've used AM STD strats and teles before so I'm no stranger to that series. I wasn't sold on the Tele changes upon first reading about them, but after playing a few I feel they are indeed improved. |

ReddRanger - me too, I'm in the group that has played them, loved them but doesn't own one. Only thing I like better is the Nocaster and the GE Smith.
If those didn't exist I would have the Deluxe. Actually, I may own one anyway someday as I'm deeply in love with the Cherry bust finished one. |

The consistent response however from the people who have either played and/or bought 08 AM Stds is that they are great guitars and for whatever reason, the small changes made to the design have jelled into a noticeably better guitar than the 07 AM Series. There don't appear to be many out there that have bought them that think otherwise, which is significant. For my part, I have more Telecasters than I know what to do with and I have no reason to self-justify my purchase of the 08 AM Std because to me it's just another type of Tele to collect. From that viewpoint, I was very pleasantly surprised when the 08 AM Std turned out to be such a great guitar, as my personal expectation of something "special" was low in the first instance. So much so, that I have actually ordered another one for the collection, as the first one is getting played every week and will not be in a collectable condition for long... |
