Who makes the most accurate single ply white pickguards ?

If you mean flush against the body, I got one from Warmoth and its perfect. The one I got from Allparts is good, but its not flush where Fender started adding extra screws.

I bought a white Allparts Esquire guard for an assembly I was doing on a MIM body and neck. It wasn't too bad, but it did need a lot of work to get the neck to fit just right.

I also bought a Callaham parchment Esquire guard. It was perfect.

Speaking of pickguards, I have a newbie question.

My American Standard Tele came with a white pickguard. I wanted black so I bought a Fender black p/g from MFriend and replaced the original white.

The black pickguard, it turns out, has a white beveled edge. But when I’ve seen other Teles with original guards (I assume) they are all black, including the edge.

What is the history behind these things? Is there a stock black-only and a stock black and white version?

I would prefer all black. Where is the best (cheapest) place to get one?

(I’d also prefer one without pickup screws in them but I guess that’s impossible.)

Prior to mid-59, single-ply (solid colour) pickguards were used. First came black fibre ones followed by bakelite. In 1954 white, single-ply pickguards became standard. The mid-59 Customs came with 3-ply white-black-white celluloid guards, and by late '63 all standard models came with WBW version, which were made from plastic material after '64. By mid '59 Fender had given up on 5-screw guards for 8-screw ones.

Your "black with white edges" is therefore a 3-ply BWB guard. Single-ply black is easy to find although ones made from bakelite tend to be expensive. Custom shops like Pickguardian will make you anything you want - with or without screw holes - and may not be too pricey.

Yeah, I know there are some custom pickguard places and I may go that route.

I was joking a little about the number of screw holes. 'Cause the neck pickup on the modern Teles needs those screws to hold it in place, correct?

You are absolutely correct, except that the WBW celluloid guards were actually greyish green because of the nitrate in the celluloid. It's this color that the "Mint Green" guards are trying to replicate. But they were actually SUPPOSED to be white!

The standard Blonde Teles never got a "nitrate guard" though, only the Custom Telecaster and custom colored standard Teles.

I've bought both white and black guards from Fender. The white guard they sell, they say is from the Custom Shop models that use a white 5-hole 1-ply guard. It fit my Mex-Classic perfectly, without any buckling or bowing, as the factory guard did. I've also used the BlackGuard from Fender and I've had a custom guard made by Terrapin Guitars, who is a custom pickguard guy (www.terrapinguitars.com) He also did a great job. The guys, here use the Callaham, which I hear is very good. Other than those three, I haven't used any others. THe white 5-hole 1-plys can be tough to find. Lots of shops do the black, but not the white. A Stew-Mac I tried
didn't line-up with my drilling, so I went with the Fender, and both black and white 1-plys fit very well.
