Another YouTube video

Lotsa noodling in this home-made tele video .. but the hybrid triplets towards
the end are worth a view. These kids are KILLIN ME!

Sol is/used to be a member here. Haven't seen him post in a while - his handle was SolTwanger.

Very awesome, great chops and feel. I recall he was interested in moving to Nashville when he got out of school in the UK...

Yup, scary technique for a kid. (Except he's no Roy Buchanan with the volume knob ).

The day he learns how to use it in a musical context, he'll be a great player (if he isn't already) ...

Last time i saw him post he said he was off to Texas to do some recording, haven't heard what happened yet but it would be good to know.

Sol get out of bed and get us up to speed !

Sol is still member here, he must have missed this thread. The Texas thing didn't work out from what he told me, but I'll leave the telling of that story to him.

^^perfect example of why I don't post here anymore^^^

but i am toying with the idea of soing an instrumental jazz/country album as a trio type thing, with brushes drums and upright bass and just TELE into tube amp and nothing else. I will if I get time away from my pop/punk band I will definately consider doing this in my bedroom with a few microphones and a mixer.

And yeah as Rich said, the texas thing didn't work out. they were a bunch of clowns who wanted me playing on the back of a truck being marketed as 'the ghost of SRV'

cluelesss twatsacks. Oh well, I only really went to rip them off out of a free trip so I guess everyone is happy. And i got to learn a bit about america and subsequently learned to appreciate england a little more.

but seriously thank you so much everyone, I will now shamelessly plug my myspace www.myspace.com/solphilcox

the stuff on there is mostly blues, which is another thing i do sometimes when I am bored. but there is an ANCIENT country intrumental on there called 'toad rag' which has some picking on you might (or might not) like.

thanks again

You forgot my parenthesis "(if he isn't already)".

My post was actually meant as a compliment to your playing, but I'd like to hear it in a musical context before I make any "final judgement" .

I'm sorry you took it the wrong way ...

I think Sol got tired of people saying things like he's not Roy Buchannon with the volume knob while also saying he a great player.. He is Sol Philcox and not anyone else so why even throw that comment in there if ya like his playing you like it why must everyone feel the need to say well he isn't SRV or whoever, he is who he is and no one else. That's why I hate those threads that compare say Redd Volkaert and Brad Paisley it's just a waste of time. I am sure we have all been influenced by someone and can hear bits of their style in our own. I am just jealous because I can't play like Sol. Sol has a album out by the way for those of you that are interested.

that is one of the humbling things i have ever read, thank you. wise words and well observed. although i see roy buchanon as somebody who had a musical understanding that i could only dreaming of achieving, i can't for any reason even begin to fathom why anyone felt the need to compare him to myself. that kind of thing automatically degenerates a positive thread into unnecessary and banal 'malmsteen vs. srv' type youtube drudgery which is completely innappropriate given the nature of the original posting. not trying to call anyone out or anything, just putting a few things straight.

if you like this vid, you should check nick goodwin on youtube (nick g on this forum), he is a year younger than me and not only happens to be a good friend but also is a devastating country picker who i have learned a lot from.

thanks again everone

I agree and spoken like a pro. That's Mr. Soltwanger, y'all.
Sorry you had the less than desirable experience in Texas, Sol. We like your style of playing, here. There's always somebody just dyin' to compare newer talent to a dead guy, tho' . I always wonder in amazement at that.... I mean, yes, we miss the guys that are gone, but they're gone. Nobody really wants to fill the shoes of a dead man, do they?

Great playing, in your own style, Sol. Stick to what you feel. You do indeed have talent+.

I may have used the wrong words, and I've said I'm sorry, but there's no need to rub it in, is it?

Sorry, sorry, sorry ......

I understand your reaction to Telemarkman's comment especially the
comparison to Roy Buchanan. But maybe you overreacted a little about
his other comment.
Why upload a video on Youtube if you
can't take criticisms, in this case also constructive?

You are an awesome guitar player but you're not holy..........
However, really great playing on the Youtube clips.

oh totally, i agree. I wasn't saying anything about the criticisms of my volume pot usage (which i know is sloppy) just it is annoying when a 60 year old makes snerdy remarks about 'being able to play in a musical context'. Im sorry Telemarkman, I didn't mean to take your words so literally; you must understand that there is so much of this $hit on the internet, youtube especially where (particularly younger) guitarist are put through all these ridiculous 'legitimacy' trials over whether they can play the blues/be tasteful/play with a band etc etc. It just angered me that there are clear links on the video AND my youtube channel, as well as my TDPRI profile/signature/threads to my myspace page where I have songs (no, not noodling/wanking/shredding/whatever) which I have recorded, produced and engineered completely by myself. a quick bit of observation and less itch on the keyboard finger would have eradicated any need to post the comment in the first place.

can we all get on, I don't mind criticism in any way. in fact i way prefer it to compliments, just no assumptions please :-)

thanks all!

Sol;

Speaking as one Brit to another - you've got nowt to worry about me duck cos what you're already doing is 100% better than most people could even dream of.

Speaking as a guitarist of average talent - same answer.

If you want some criticism - get your hair cut.

Pete

aww thank you so much!! If my vids inspire even one person in the world to play more, then my work is done. I am 18 years old, been playing about 4 years (playing country about 1 year) and my tele heroes are all the usual suspects:

Brent Mason
Danny Gatton
Redd Volkaert
Prince
Burton, rich, Nicholls etc etc etc

thanks again buddy, keep an eye on myspace for any new shizzle.
