bienvenidos! (i'm confused)

so after much surfing around here, i broke down and got a baja tele today. i think i like it, but i'm not sure....

my other choice was a used american deluxe. they had it priced at 1199 and said they'd let it go for 1000. i balked and went with the baja. the deluxe is a weird orange color, don't know the year, and can't find any info about the color anywhere (it may be a one-off or something). also, the headstock says "telecaste" but i think the "r" just fell off.

anyways, if i decide to go back for that one, is 1000 a reasonable price for a used deluxe?

thanks

Man, I don't know. My only Tele is a 91' American. I got hooked into this place and am about to drop a few bucks myself in the next month or so.

Actually, I gig pro, so need to drop a few grand a year to avoid paying taxes, but have heard very good things about the Baja. I will only buy American built guitars, but, having said that.

You'll see more people around here praising the Mexican Fenders than you will the American ones.

So I think you have a very fine axe, and wish you the very best.

Murph.

Sounds high for a used one. The color is probably Candy Tangerine (one of my favorites) that was on the AmDlx Tele's a few years ago. In person it looks quite different than the photos.

The AmDlx is a very nice Tele, but I'd rather have a Baja (and I do). They all feel different to each of us, so play the Baja for awhile and go back to try the AmDlx (thinner neck, noiseless pups, modern bridge, contour back, top binding). You gotta go with the one that fits.

That's the one. I forgot about the pearl pg, and abalone dots. It should also have the S-1 switch like the Baja.

It will have a serial number that starts with DZ- the first number after the Z will indicate the year, DZ0=2000, DZ1=2001, DZ2=2002, etc.

Used prices are relative, depends on what's popular (certain models, odd colors). A brand new 2008 AmDlx is about $1,275. I think the Tangerine Deluxe that I almost bought (new) a few years ago was $900 in the store. Maybe a used one that was "like new" could be $1,000 (they came with a hardcase, cable, strap, and strap locks too). Of course you'll always pay more at a store, but... ? Personally I be shooting for $700-800.

Looking at eBay completed listings for this month, there are four AmDlx Tele's that sold from $500-800, and three more from $845-900 (none were tangerine).

well....problem solved.

i took the baja back today. went to a couple of stores in town just to see what's out there without any real intent. ended up the last store i hit had about 8 teles all hanging together. i saw a white MIM and sent my hand towards it, only my hand actually grabbed a different axe. weird since my brain was saying "grab the white one"......

anyhoo, took it back to the amp room and didn't put it down for an hour and a half. i haven't had a guitar speak to me like this in at least 10 years, if ever.

needless to say, i put a deposit down and in 2 weeks i'll be rocking a new AV52RI. i just need to decide if i want to update the wiring and put .10s on it. part of me says to leave it as is. dunno. thoughts?

Hey rollyfoster - and welcome! Congrats on the av52ri! Glad you found one that spoke to you - you're hooked now ... :-))

Swapping the strings is obviously no big deal - so go for that if you feel more comfortable with them. I thought those things came with .10s (mine did) but I'm probably mistaken - I'm sure someone here will know. Play it awhile before you start tweaking the wiring though ...

see how you like the vintage wiring, maybe you'll decide it's for you ... but personally, i couldn't do without the middle-position (both pickups in parallel) sound. that's a lot to sacrifice!

i'm definitely going to do the wiring, i'm going to be playing a lot of meters/70s funk on this thing. i'm just not sure about changing the capacitor. i really like the neck and bridge sounds as is and want to preserve that as much as possible. and what about grounding? it's weird because there's a hum in the middle and bridge positions, but no hum at the neck(muffled) position right now.
