72' CUSTOM CLUB
A few years back on the FDP a group of us started posting our comments, pictures and mods to our 72' Customs -
Originals, MIM, amd MIJ models. It was alot of fun and I still love these models of Teles. So who's still out there? Any body new to this model of Tele? Tell us your story, post a picture, any mods, MIM,MIJ, Original? I miss mine so much I just bought one tonight. Here's a picture of my last one disassembled: Here's the new one: ![]() The back: ![]()

Congrats on the new guitar!
My '72 Custom RI has become my favorite guitar...probably all time fave at this point. I bought it at a GC in Washington after I left Alaska in a motorhome and was wandering the earth. It had some issues and I got it for $320. Stripped the neck and gave it a tru-oil finish, leveled the frets, and it was good to go. Eventually swapped the pots out for 500K, after some advice from Terry Downs. Now I just love this guitar. Spanky tele tone from the bridge and the widerange makes a great slide pup. ![]() |

I tried a Sunburst with rosewood fretboad earlier today at Bill's Music. Nice but I really wanted the maple board like my old one. Morroben did you swap out all the pots for 500 K or just the neck pickup pots?

I almost forgot to mention that I recently swapped out the bridge pup for a SD 5/2. It sounds good and I'll probably stick with it, but the stock bridge pup sounded good too. |

I have a mod I do where you pull the tone knob for the neck pickup and it makes the WRHP a single coil and has sort of a Strat tone to it. It very easy on the MIM models because it has a 4 conductor pickup wire at the pickup.
The mod is cool because you can't see it, it's reversable, and it sounds cool. You can start out a tune or lead in the single coil neck pickup mode and as your lead builds you push the pot down and end with some serious tone. But it actually sounds great playing in the single coil neck sound "A-la-Strat" and you can always push the pot back down and your back to stock.

Oh another point, if you remove the pickguard you can actually adjust the pole pieces on the neck pickup you can't see - from underneath. For example if your "G" string is too strong you can adjust down the "G" string pole piece from up top on the one coil and then remove the pickguard and adjust down the pole piece that isn't visible from above on the other coil.
Many times we found that some of the Customs could sound a bit muddy in the neck position but with some adjustments in overall pickup height, whether up or down, and individual pole piece adjustment - you could tame her. Many have put an overwound Tele pickup in the bridge to balance out the volume of the 2 pickups. You can adjust your Volumes but if you like the Bridge to be a bit fatter but retain the Tele sound it's a cool mod. Dropping the neck PU is easy but sometimes you lose some of the tone if too low. It really depends on the guitar. I love em' and have had the opprtunity to try originals, MIM, and MIJ models. Each have there own feel and sound - subtle but nevertheless - different. Some of the originals I've tried have had some really hot neck pickups which are great for Rock and hard drivin' Blues. They're all good! For what ever reason I tend to like the MIM models best. They have a certain something I like but so many have said that the MIJ models are tops for the reissues. Those who own the originals are especially lucky because those babies have been slowly climbing in value (finally). Check out Sheryl Crow's Guitarists in this shot: ![]()

i absolutely love mine (MIM sunburst with rosewood...i've posted pics a 1000 tinmes before...)...snap and twang on the bridge, jazz tones on the neck, good strummin in between...it's the closest i own to a swiss army guitar...

Sounds great shades.
What kind of neck are you using a Strat style headstock or Tele style headstock on your Hybrid? Here's my first Custom - the one that got away....... ![]()
