MIJ SQ Squier

Scored this one on ebay today, $305 with hard case. Pics were lousy, but maybe thats what kept the bidding down. This one supposedly has only 1 ding to the body, looks to be in real nice shape. I had a similar black SQ a while back, but it was all beat up. I love these old early 80's Squiers, they look and play great. Throw my set of Don Mare pickups in there and I've got a top shelf tele.

Nice score, I agree the MIJ Squiers are good value for money.

Well, the long story ended today. I won this on ebay 3/25 and paid via Paypal. He screwed up the shipping, and it got lost in US Mail, didn't arrive till today. Came in a decent Fender thermoplastic case. Real nice weight at 6.5 lbs. Overall clean, wear and scratch-wise, only 1 small edge ding, but strings probably 10 year old, and frets need a serious polish to get the gunk off. Knobs and neck plate pitted. All the pot nuts were loose, knobs all flopping around, bridge pickup lowered till the screws had popped out of the pickup, and sticker goop all over the neck pup.

Considering I thought it was lost in the ozone forever, it's in nice shape, and very serviceable. Tightened her up, and took a look around her. Whoa, what's this?? I was expecting the usual big barrel MIJ steel saddles (actually brass with steel veneer) with small string notches, but lookee there...it's a set of real deal 70's slotted saddles! A nice bonus!

The bridgeplate was standard MIJ issue. Then I look at the bridge pickup, it looked old, had a bunch of wax on the top bobbin. I started to wonder, if the guy replaced the saddles, what else did he replace?? So I opened her up, but alas, all else was stock MIJ, right down to the DM-30 switch. Interestingly, when I popped the neck, there were no markings at all on neck or neck pocket, rather unusual in my experience.

Gonna string her up tonight, and see how the Squier pups sound. Typically, OK, IMO, but can easily be slayed by almost any quality aftermarket pups.
