What kind of mods do you have in mind for it?

Congratulations, and welcome to the forum!

I finally got to play one of those Avril models, and I really liked the neck.

My first mod will be to do something about the white neck. I would love to get some type of vintage amber tint on it.

Any suggestions about how to do this without having to spray?

The neck almost seems unfinished, but it must have a very thin polyurethane finish, right?

I don't think you're going to find away that doesn't involve spraying or at least using a wipe on poly.

I can describe to you what has worked very well for me in the past. I kind of think of it as my little secret discovery so don't tell anyone else. Ok!!

Alcohol based leather dye will go right over the poly that's on the neck. You'll need to mix orange with brown and play around to get the right shade. Practice on a chunk of maple if you can get one. You'll need to have poly on your practice piece of course.

When you get your mix where you want it you simply put it on a clean rag and and go over the neck. It dries completely in about 1 minute or less. If it dries a little streaky it will even out with a dry rag wipe down. It's a very forgiving process.

After the tinting you will still need to spray poly ( I'd recommend Krylon products) over the neck to cover the dye otherwise it will wear off.

The neck on my Indonesian is definitely unfinished. I don't really mind. I got it for 160, with free shipping from GC, and it's an amazing tele (tone, alder, alnico, etc). I had half a can of Wipe-on Poly sitting around anyway.

Its most likely a poly satin finish on the neck, like I had on my Squire Affinity Butterscotch Special Tele.

I used Kiwi Brown Shoe Polish (the paste in the little round can), and it worked surprisingly good. I did it in small overlapping patches: Rubbed it in real good, let it set for a few minutes, and really buffed it good to get all the excess off. Other's here did that too. A few said that the brown polish came of on there hands, but that never happened too me. A few also said they had to keep doing it over and over, and again, I never experienced that, and yes, I sweat big time (people always comment about the sweat stains on my guitar after I finish playing). Others had a report similar too mine. So it was a mixed bag of results, but it might have been the difference between the way we all applied it, and rubbed it off. Who knows?

The result from the kiwi polish is not an "amber" neck. It gives it a slight golden tan look, sorta like a "patina". It worked so well, I never sprayed the neck. Kept it that way for years, and I just recently sold it.
