Getting my Tele fulfilled a lifelong dream
Hello everyone, When I was 16, I was playing an old Gibson 335, but my best friend got a '66 Tele for his birthday. I never forgot that guitar, and I have been smitten ever since, I came close to that tone with a couple of strats that I had over the years, but couldn't fully achieve the feel and the tone that I was after. I was crazy about Jim Messina's tone when he was with Poco, then later L&M and realized that a lot of the twang and tones could not happen any other way. So, I finally shopped and got an 07 MIM Tele, white on white, and I really love her. Playing my Tele is as natural as breathing to me, and I am surprized how much this guitar inspires me, to play long, and to try new things out musically. I haven't played a lot of different Teles like a lot of you have, but I sure like this one. I'm on my second set of strings with her now, and I think I'll stick with GHS 10-46. I tried Elixir 10-46 strings with this guitar, but didn't like the tone not enough twang!0

No doubt. More people need to come to terms; that Jimmy Messina is truly responsible for why a lot of guys are here today at this board, and why the Tele hung on when the Strat had all that momentum. Sure, you may have heard others later on, maybe a few guitarists before Jimmy that happened to play Tele. But Jimmy is why I switched, and I know I'm not close to being alone on this.
Welcome, Catalankid.

Finally a new Tele
Enjoy that guitar! Just remember, on a Tele the tone and volume controls are meant to be used, really used. You may or may not set your amp different too. Have fun!

Hey Cat,
Welcome aboard. I'm over here in Caldwell where we speak Tele too. The rule is that you must post a photo of your latest Tele, so get busy with the camera. I, too, love Messina's tone, like the lead on "You're Mama Can't Dance", that is dripping with Tele twang. I saw L & M at a great show abour 1975 at the Utah State Fair Grounds on a perfect summer day. Lots of twang at that show that was from the "On Stage Tour" with about the same set list. Cool. All I know is that my playing really took off when I made my sweet little '69 Thinline my #1. Bonneville Bruce P.S. We have friends over at Rupert, so maby we can get together some time when I'm in the neighborhood. Quote:

Welcome aboard catalankid!
Getting one's first Telecaster is a milestone in any player's life. I can still remember the feeling when I got my first one in 1967 after I'd been GASing for one for more than 5 years ... But man, almost 40 years of GAS |

There is just far too much good music out there.
I had completely forgotten about L&M! Had to explore Youtube and found this. You've gotta love that Tele twang!! http://youtube.com/watch?v=mPhmxxyGOU4 Anyone else remember those bell bottoms jeans? |

Thanks guys, I am glad I found this community of Tele players just like me. I will post pics as soon as my daughter visits, she is so much more tech-savvy than I am. Bonneville Bruce, it is so good to know that there are friends close by. I go up to Meridian occasionally, and would welcome the chance to play guitars. Argan, the Gibson ES 335 that I had was a great first guitar, after that acoustic Mom got me with unbearable action. I bought it for $150 in 1968, and it was gigged hard when I got it, and I gigged with it as well. Anyway, I traded it in on a Les Paul Custom. I loved the way the Paul played and sounded, but for me, a LP is a very bottom-heavy and unbalanced guitar when I have it strapped on and standing. So, I traded it in on a Guild acoustic which I still have. To me there's no comparasion between a LP and a Tele for playing comfort. My MIM only weighs 7.9 lbs. so not only is it light in weight, but very balanced, and easy to play. I really get a kick out of the guy who posts here, and has a picture of his sweet Tele and says "This is Mit, she is my first love." It's all about the feeling you get when you play.
