Re-fret issues

My '95 Fat Tele's jumbo frets are getting low....

If I shell out for a re-fret (6150's), will pulling the frets ruin the tint finish on the neck and board?

I like the idea of a new neck as the price may be the same as a re-fret, SO...

...I'm liking the 50's Classic neck and frets, does Fender sell these, or is there another parts company builder that makes something close?

i doubt fender will sell you a new neck, but there is lots of places for aftermarket necks. warmoth,allparts,musikraft usacg etc... even ebay if you want a real 50's Classic neck.

It's a shame, but I'm (almost) sure Fender will not sell necks anymore.

Leos original idea of a bolt neck was so you could just swap it out rather than worry with a fretjob, it being done right, ect. I guess it became a headache for the beancounters.

I don't like the idea of an aftermarket neck, you lose the serial #, and you lose part of your guitar, some people don't care about either. Ahem....

You could always buy a new neck, keep the old one in the case and play on. That way, when you sell it you still have the original and can play it all you want and not worry about. It's kind of sad that new necks are cheaper than fret jobs.

My 91' 3 burst (Tele) is my #1. I may consider stainless because I am hard on frets. I don't know about tonal problems. I've played Parkers with stainless frets. I don't like Parkers, but I didn't dislike the frets. I want them to last, I question how much effect they could have on tone, but having said that.

I don't like stainless strings.

At all.

I've been around this block many times. I spent over $1000 to have my vintage Tele neck refinished (since it became too raw around the edges) and refretted. If it's not a collectable or vintage guitar, I've gone to Warmoth. I did this on my '98 MIM 50s, since the vintage frets were worn too low to crown. The neck cost me $250, finished, with a Corian nut, and bolted-up requiring no tweaks at all. It was the best appraoch for the money. And what I found, is that the Warmoth frets are very durable. I've been playing the b'jezzez out of it for over 2 years, and there's no hint of fret wear. So, I've become a Warmoth guy and would go that route again, but I'd go for the '59 Roundback profile vs. Std. Thin, which is a little slim for my taste. And, I'd go with vintage or vintage-modern vs. their "pro" series, which lacks the back-skunk-stripe.

A refret on a maple fingerboard may not require a refinish.

All Parts offers finished stock Fender Japan necks at reasonable prices. It will need a nut installed

If you have very special neck requirements, you'll need a custom neck that will require refinishing. It will need a nut installed.

ALSO, consider that a refret with taller frets will most likely require a new nut - in your case, that could be a good thing to replace yer plastic nut with one of hard bone.

I have a buddy who plays a SRV Strat. He asked me about doing a stainless re-fret. I thought about it and suggested that I just make him a new neck to his personal specs and mothball the original neck. That way, should he ever decide to sell, he'll have a completely original to offer.
