Roy Nichols Experts...Roy & Sol? Terry, Mark, Johnny, Redd...
This past weekend I was driving and I was listening to some old Hawaiian music. "I Like You" by Sol Hoopii came on and I was struck by how similar his playing was to Roy's. And I mean in a big way! It's all there - the chicken pickin', the pre bends, the notes and licks that twist your ear - all the things that make Roy so great. For real! So I was wondering, do any of you guys know if Roy was a fan? My guess is he was.
I don't know how to post an mp3 of the song by Sol Hoopii, but if you go to the link below and listen to the audio sample of the first song, you'll hear just a small bit of what I'm talking about towards the end. In the 30's-40's Hawaiian music was very popular in the USA many kids had acoustic guitars with raised nuts to play slide on.
Im sure Roy heard that music as a youth..

Those guys
back then were sponges and listened to everything so I wouldn't be surprised at all if Roy listened to that music.

i never made that connection but it could very well be... if you really want to get under the skin of roy nichols listen to his recordings with maddox bros. and rose... it's fair to say that later roy was heavily influenced by james burton's groundbreaking work with haggard... he always quoted django reinhardt as his prime influence... roy was simply great... as was sol... tj

Thanks ,I'll hafta' check into Sol hopii . I don't know why,but every time i hear "Walking on the fightin' side of me" ,I burst out laughing when the guitar lick comes ,because its so cool. i know it's only a few notes,but the phrasing is right on the money,and says so much . Thats Roy there, right ?
