James Taylor and a...TELE?
That's right. I'm flipping through the channels and here's James Taylor (JT) strapin' on a sunburst Tele (look like a 50's Reissue) with maple neck in his ever so humorous way and starts ripping out Steamroller blues. Public Television broadcast and he had a a ball with this tune. Played the whole thing with the ashtray cover on.
Go James!

I saw that too. James was rockin.
That was a great show and James told great stories between songs telling how he wrote the songs and little stories about them. James has always been one of the best from his 1st album which was on The Apple label he was the first artist signed with Apple. Told some great stories about how he went into the studio while The Beatles werent working on the White Album and did all those tracks on his 1st album.

Here's the November 2006 NY Times article that has James Taylor discussing the Drum Machine and other topics - very interesting reading -
On the Road Again, a Sensitive Singer- Songwriter (and One Man Band) That drum machine wouldn't fit in my Bedroom Studio - I would have to park it in 1/2 of my 2-car garage Gil

The drum machine sounded really good.
James Taylor and Neil Young were like gods for me back in the early 70's

![]() Whoa, what a cool looking room he's in, probably his big barn studio in Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard where he hangs out. I've seen him with strats before, but only in the last 3-4 years seen him with a tele. His taste in electric guitars is improving! |

I saw that too, pretty cool show. He sounded pretty slick on his Tele. I stumbled onto that show after it had started & about 5 minutes in, I realized that it was shot at the newly renovated Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, Mass.
My sister lives in Pittsfield & we had gone there in the fall to see the original, silent version of "Zorro" complete with a live orchestra. She mentioned then that they had shot the JT thing there earlier in the year. Pretty amazing space. I think JT lives around there now as they see him about town occasionally & I'm told one of his younger kids goes the same school as my nephew. |

The perspective might be stretched with a wide angle lens so the amp could be a Princeton that looks wider than it is, or maybe a Deluxe. You wouldn't necessarily see the black speaker cage and magnet if it was a little 10" oxford like the Princetons had, its hidden behind that slat of wood that goes across the tubes.

The music and the stories were both great. I was amazed at the large following that seems to go to show after show after show. |

unless he moved, i think james lives around lenox, massachusettes. but, he most likely has houses elsewhere including manhattan and still in martha's vineyard.
other than a hollowbody electric, a telecaster seems to be the guitar of choice with acoustic players, including myself, imo because of that bridge pup. its got a similar "brittleness" that somehow translates closely to the sound of an acoustic guitar. its also comfortable to play. i love james and feel of ALL singers ever... he has the voice of "everyman", to those who are fimiliar with that concept. play and SING on james...! imho. rand z tropicalsoul.net |
