No Clear Coat- how would it look?
I have no idea why, but this just popped into my head.
How would a refin look if you just used Krylon and then wet sanded/polished as normal? I know you'd loose some of the "depth" the clear coat provides, but what do you think the other effects would be? Anybody done this? any pix? |

Clear coats have more solid content than color coats, its just the nature of the beast. So the finish would likely to be more easily dinged. Also, color coats don't yellow or craze like a lacquer clearcoat would.
But there's plenty of people who don't clearcoat for these exact reasons, or for timesaving (like Fender did with many custom colors- why some old Olympic white guitars didn't yellow). Just use enough color to prevent sand throughs, and you're golden. I personally like the way nitro clear yellows and cracks over time, and it's easier to buff out than color coats because of the high solids content. |
