Neck pickup problem-need help.

I have been restoring my 72'tele.After replacing the neck pickup springs the neck pickup is now dead.
I noticed the jumper wire at the back of the black wire on the underside of the pickup that was soldered to the cover has come loose, also noticed a small piece of coil wire adrift, can either of these be the cause of the neck pick up malfunction. The wiring all looks intact.

Any help would be appreciated,thanks.

With the pickup un-connected, measure the two leads to see if you have a reasonable resistance. You can do this with a multimeter and see how close it is for the specifications for your pickup. Someone else can chime in, but anything beyond 10% of the spec's is probably not good.

No resistence isn't good either. Oh, and infinite (open) is bad as well.

OK,thanks but just want to know first if the dead pickup can be caused by the jumper ground wire being unconnected or maybe damage(although looks minimal)to the coils,if not then I'll unsolder it and check the resistance.

Yes.

It doesn't sound so in tact! It sounds like you've got a break in your coil and you've got a break at one of the leads.

Do what gh says, and be prepared to have it repaired or rewound. It'll cost $50 or so.

I've repaired a couple of non-working pickups. If the coil wire has broken, you'll have an open circuit. If the coil is broken it's most likely one of the outer windings. You may be able to un-solder the outer winding from the terminal ........... unwind until you come to the break ......... discard the unwound wire ............ unwind a couple of winds of the other side of the break and re-solder it to the terminal. This thread might help explain.

Why don't you have the original one re-wound? A good suggestion above, or Lindy Fralin will do you a good job too...

Just a clarification, this pickup is not the original from the '72 but a Seymour Duncan, for the cost or rewinding I can get a new one.I do have the originals and one day may put the originals back in.

Thanks for the repair tutorial.May give it a shot.
