Milling Machine Guitar ....... What Happened?

What ever happened to that project in which someone was going to build a Telecaster with a milling machine?

I was wondering the same thing just the other day. Unfortunately I don't seem very good at using the search function.

Well they use a CNC router, not a vertical mill. A rather different amimal. get involved with the radio control boat people if you want to see home made CNC routers. I have seen them able to handle 4' X 8' stock. His brother did make a .dfx file from which I hacked some g-code , but I think there is some issues. I have not run it on a simulator and worked back to the original

We have a brand new Boxford CNC router at my school, with a bed that's 4' x 2'. It hasn't been switched on yet, but the guy from Boxford's coming down to deliver the training next Tuesday. Have a look at:

Not surprisingly, I'm hoping to be able to make guitar bodies on it!

Oh nice, I'm jealous for sure now. I wonder if it can create contour files from a tracing probe ,that would be to much to ask , but wouldn't it be cool to just be able but a body on it and have it just trace the outline , then be able to cut one from that tracing. That work envelope will do necks to.

I don't think it can do that, but it would be a useful feature.

I'm not going to attempt necks ever again, after making one that was dreadful. I'll leave that to the pros.

I run a cnc router for a custom cabinet shop. I've done bodies and neck on the machine as well as various templates. The hardest part is making/getting a good (accurate) drawing. The contours of a guitar body are hard to get just right. There are laser probes that can create drawings but they are $$$. For necks I use the machine to cut the trussrod channel and the outside profile. I shape the fretboard and back of the neck by hand. I've got good CAD drawings for a 50's style tele as well as MasterCam files and g-code if anyone is interested. I've tried to post them here before but the attachment utility dosn't seem to like .dxf files. If anyone else has access to a cnc I'd be happy to help with drawings and toolpathing info.

Here's the story. We had been working on it but we didn't know what we were getting into, and we didn't have enough time to do it. So I'm going to finish it with the router, whenever I get around to it. I know, I don't have the greatest work ethic. But we're also busy recording me an EP. Which I plan to finish...of course I said that about the guitar, too. Oh well, we'll see, I'll probly finish it some day, I don't have the highest amount of income, though.

Hi Jaydawg,

If it is not to much trouble , I would love a copy of your code. Do you know what interpreter you are using. G-code was never standardized so my experience is they all do thing a little differently , if you know what it was written for , then you know what to look for that may cause problems on another interpreter
