series in #2 on a 3way switch?
can it be done? How so? I hate the #2 position on a typical tele, so if I could get the series thing going w/out the extra notch I'd be twanging fool!!!

You hate the middle position on a tele??!?!?!?!
I'm fairly certain a stock 3 way won't do what you're asking. Are you adverse to adding a switch to your tele? You could put in a push/pull pot and your tele would still look stock. |

I know you can build your own custom 3-way switch from parts from electronic catalogues ( I know - I did)- the thing you need is called a wafer switch and you need 3 poles. you may find that the hole spacing might not match - in that case you'll have to make a new plate.
In the UK you can get them from RS or Lorlin - not sure about the US. Personally I'd live with extra notch... Cheers - Ed. |

how about n+b pup in series thru 2 vol knobs?
I generally stay on the bridge pup of my teles. I find the middle sound is too normal and polite for the way I play. And the neck often clashs with bassist. Too much low end. Besides I dig the bridge tone on a good tele pup. How about wiring the pups in series thru 2 vol knobs and 1 tone knob? This way I can feed the amount of low end I want into the bridge by dialing in the neck pup. I have a blender/master-tone/master-vol on 1 of my teles thats gets close but not right.
My thought is that I'd leave the bridge like normal (i use the vol knob to control the amps overdrive) and bring in the neck when I want to fatten things up. The three way I can then use as pos1 straight thru, pos2 tone cap .001, pos3 tone cap .01. is this feasible? |

I'm pretty sure you can do it
Here's a link to stew-mac's website where they describe how it's done:
http://stewmac.com/wiring101/pickup_...ification.html I alos remember the wiring diagram that comes with tele texas specials shows them in series and not parallel with a 3-way switch. I hope this helps. --James W |

The diagram that comes with a package of Tele Texas Specials has the middle position in series with the standard switch. I never noticed it because I just went ahead and wired in parallel like I always do. Probably installed 5 sets before someone on here mentioned it was in series - Probably that Murphy guy! :

Thanks guys thats great info! My Tele isn't very non-standard. I just had a custom control plate made for it and had three pot holes drilled instead of the switch/vol/tone combo. I have it as follows vol on top, tone in the middle, blender last. Its a neat feature as I can get tons of different tones before using the ton knob. If i'm riding the lead pup and want to fatten it up a bit for a passage or lick i'll just roll in some neck pup. I'd like it in series so that the effect is stronger.
The best part of all the info y'all gave me is that Im using texas specials! So I can just wire her up like the diagram!!!!!!!!!!! Yeehaaa! |
