Yes and yes. I use one and it's well worth it if you're anal about chords sounding in tune.

I recall someone (Rob DiStefano, I think) posting that a well set up guitar, with a properly cut nut, was just as good.

As I have no experience of Earvana nuts, I can't comment from personal experience though.

next question...

...did you install it yourself, or have someone do it?

I installed the OEM version myself on a new USACG neck.

It was a hassle free installation.

I also installed a retrofit one on the previous neck and it was
relatively easy, but I needed an accurate tuner to adjust it.

The installation instructions on the Earvana site are
quite complete and easy to follow.

I'm moderately experienced as a guitar mechanic, but far from a professional.

That's what I was wondering also, as the two Fender-style nuts offered on the Earvana web site were not exact matches for my 1.650" nut-width '72 Tele Deluxe. I sent an email to the company and they wrote back with this message:

"You could go either way, Check your string spread. Our 1-5/8" spread is (E-E 1.38 ) and 1-11/16" is (E-E 1.42)."

So there you go. Now, if I can just find a ruler...

I've used one and it does what it says.......to a degree. It's not perfect, barre chords sound amazing all the way up the neck but still some cowboy chords (c major, f major, am) still don't sound truly tempered.

I also used the Earvana nut as a template to make my own version out of bone, this worked just as well and sounded better. The material Earvana uses IMHO dulls the sound and isn't as resonant as bone.

Just my 2 cents.

Hmm, what if my e-e string spread is 3.75 cm= 1.477 inches?

I agree. If I was building a guitar from scratch I might make my own compensated nut out of bone (just for the mojo factor) but I don't hear a big difference between the stock Earvana and bone.

The nut that I made was a copy of the screw on retro fit variety. I used a piece of bone from an old acoustic bridge saddle. Instead of screwing the nut down I just put two small dabs of superglue to hold it in place.

For those of you that have enquired into the possibility of me making more bone nuts for sale, I'm sorry but it's not something I can do at present. Many thanks for asking though.

Here's a link to an interesting site that contains details of constructing tailor made comepnsated nuts, I found it very useful:
