1978' Left Handed Custom - Bridge Pick up swap?
Hi All,
My 78' Custom is going in for a neck restoration and I've got a couple issues I'd like to take care of while she's in. (new bridge/saddles) But what I need advice on is switching the bridge pick up. I've never been 100% happy with it on its own. It sounds really thin. Mids and lows are really scooped. I use the neck humbucker the most, and occasionally both. My question is what bridge pickup would pair well with the original 78' humbucker? I don't want to swap the neck too. So I need a single coil that plays nice. I'm not looking for twang as much as a sustained chime and shimmer. Any help from this knowledgeable group would be greatly appreciated. |

I'd say something like the Duncan Donahue would be a great match. The highs are less pronounced and it's got some girth to it, but still sounds like a traditional Tele pickup. It pairs well with a humbucker.
I'm not sure I've ever heard a Tele bridge pickup that had character you could describe as chime and shimmer, not without some good effects. Have you? |

Thanks Koko Tele,
I think my description is lacking. The chime and shimmer is the end result I would like (I'll use some subtle effects to get there.) Just looking for a PU that will serve as a platform to get there, and also pairing well with my original humbucker. What you describe is what I'm looking for and a more accurate description. Thanks! |

I think Kokoteles point is that Tele bridge pickups arent generally associated with what you require.
May I suggest a Tele sized P90? The lower output versions have a nice mid response without being too treble-y. Should pair well with a bucker, although I assume they are wide range humbuckers which are quite dark.

Thanks string king,
I admittingly do not often use language very well :) I think Kokoteles definately clarified what I was looking for, was just wonderin if there are any other options for my custom (wide range / single coil) |
